NETTLETON WEA BRANCH STUDY DAY - SEE BOOKING DETAILS BELOW by MAY 10th

Saturday 24th May 2008 9.45 am to 4.30pm (Arrival from 9.15 for registration) Horncastle Residential College.

The Lincolnshire Gentry From the Lincolnshire Rising to the Civil War. Conducted by Bob Kershaw M.A. (Oxon), M.A. (Nottingham), Dip. Ed.

Lincolnshire, in the period 1536 to 1640, was dominated by its gentry, from the local lord of the manor to county magnates such as Sir Thomas Grantham. How did this come about? Documentary sources , both local and national, tell a story of driving ambition, opportunity provided by the dissolution of the monasteries, skill in building up agricultural empires. But they also reveal an unpleasant aspect: disputes between each other and with locals; violence; probable excess leading to certain disaster. This reflects Tudor society “on the edge”, where one serious mischance could ruin.

While considering the national background and county concerns, we will focus on the reflection of these in vivid stories centring on a north Lincolnshire gentry clan, the Goodhands. Striving, building and scheming, they also got into serious trouble leading to disaster, never hesitating to fall out with each other and their neighbours. Throughout, documentary evidence will be presented to show how all this happened.

Bookings, by telephone or post, to Jean Childs, Lindisfarne, Normanby Road, Nettleton, Lincs. LN76TB : telephone 01472 859347. by Saturday 10th May 2008. Fee : £25 (cheques payable to Nettleton WEA) to include teas and  coffees and a hot buffet lunch
