How to...
Disable the AOL Dialer, AOL Companion and AOL Spyware scheduler
These applications are known to cause problems when trying to shut down Windows. The best way to avoid these problems is to stop them from starting up in the first place.
These instructions are for Windows XP. If anyone has instructions for other OS's, please pass them on for inclusion.
There is also a simple application for this, the Start-up Control Panel, available from Mike Lin

To disable the AOL Dialer, AOL Companion or AOL Spyware scheduler, you need to click on start, then on run.
In there, you need to type msconfig
Then click on ok
In the window that has just opened, click on the startup tab. (top right)
Then take the tick out of the entries marked AOL Dialer, AOL Companion and AOLSP scheduler
Click on apply, then on OK.
Note: I'd already removed the dialer and scheduler before now, using the application by Mike Lin... which is why they don't appear in the picture.

The next window to appear will be this one...
Choose restart
When your PC has rebooted, you will get this window.
Place a tick in the box and click on ok

Congratulations. You're done.
