Maryculter Scouts

All About Us

Maryculter Scouts meet every Friday in the Scout Hall at Maryculter. There are usually about 12 Scouts- maybe 16 if we are all there. There is not a lot to do in Maryculter as it is a rural area so Scouting is a great way to meet up with your mates and get involved in some adventurous activities or just mess around.
Anyone wanting to contact the group should e-mail our leader on lesardoe@aol.com

A few of our older guys have moved on having become too old to be in the Scout section. So we will be delighted to welcome any new guys who would like to join us.

Recent Events

Oberkirch Camp 2003. This was the highlight of 2003 when we travelled to Germany for 10 days in Oberkirch. It was great being abroad and we did all sorts of things: Cycling, hiking, swimming, bowling, BBQs, Europapark visit, and so on.

SUMMER CAMP 2004 Was in Aberlour, Speyside. The site was right on the Spey with a great view along the river. We climbed Ben Rinnes, the highest mountain in the area and had a good time exploring Aberlour. On the last day we were allowed to fish in the Spey. Although salmon were jumping all around all we managed to catch was a 6" trout and an eel which hid under a stone and we couldn't get it out.

SUMMER CAMP 2005 was to the Isle of Skye. We had a great time hiking, Kayaking on Raasay and exploring the Island. The dreaded MIDGE was not too bad and we kept plenty smoke coming from the campfire to drive them away.

UNI-LOC November 2005. After a thrilling competition at Banchory, we regained the Area Uni-hoc trophy. Carron Scouts were in a commanding position going into the last game, having beaten us 3-2 and winning all their games. However a rousing performance by Aboyne cheered on by the large Maryculter contingent saw them beat Carron 2-0 to leave Carron in second place, behind Maryculter on goal difference. With Scott in goal, Iain, big Fraser, little Fraser, Alex, James and Peter Maryculter's team were worthy winners

The Hill-walk to Clochnaben in November 2005 was well attended - but it would have been good to see more younger Scouts take part as it was their age group it was aimed at. Next time maybe??

Chief Scout Award
We are delighted that James and Fraser have now collected enough Challenge badges to quailfy them for their C.S.A. The last challenge involved a 8 hour + hike along the Speyside Way, stopping overnight on the way. Rowan also completed the hike and added another challenge to his growing collection

Summer Camp 2006 was at Alyth where we had a nice sunny week after the downpowr when we arrived. Really too hot to do strenuous things, but we did manage a couple of hikes and trips to Blairgowrie and Couper-Angus

The Scouts cycled up the Hill of Fare and beyond to gain their fitness challenge in October

Unfortunately we missed out to a good Laurencekirk side in this year's uni-hoc . We came a close second

The Group had 6 Scouts attend the Highland Adventure at Strathallan Castle. Great fun was had taking part in all the adventurous activities

In May 2007 the Group took part in the Centenary camp at Braemar along with all the other groups in the Area.

Summer camp for 2007 was at Aboyne - not far - but we had great weather and good fun in the river Tanar. The Scouts also undertook a conservation project for the local Estate and tidied up some scrub-land and made habitat piles for wee beasties!

2nd November 7 Scouts built a bivi hehind the Scout H.Q. and slept in it overnight for their Zodiac award. and as part of their survival badge. Luckily it didnt rain to test the waterproof capability of the structure!!

There will be no Summer camp in 2008 but we hope to have a number of week-end camps to compensate. We have camped at Glen Dye in April, where we discovered an ADDER!!!! only feet from our tents, and are having a joint camp with the Cubs in May and a camp on top of a locam hill in June to welcome in the longest dat (22nd June).

Future Events

We hope to welcome our friends from Oberkirch to Deeside again this year. They were last over in 1994 and thoroughly enjoyed themselves at Glen Tanar. This time they fope to camp at Banchory.
