St Aidan, Celtic Monk by  Andrew W Howe
St Aidan in stone effect
Our St Aidan measures 12'' tall and is available in cold cast bronze or stone effect resin.  Weighing just over 1kg the statue can be displayed in any decor and is suitable for indoors or outdoors...proudly handcrafted in Scotland after one of our many visits to Holy Island

Aidan's mission was started at the request of King Oswald, who had been educated by the Celtic monk and who then resided on the mainland at the royal fortress of Bamborough. Holy Island became the center of great missionary activity and also the episcopal seat of sixteen successive bishops. The influence of these spiritual leaders was considerable, owing in great measure to the patronage afforded by kings such as  Oswald.
Aidan knew from the beginning he would need an isolated place for solitude and prayer to prepare for the great demands of his mission. In 625 he established a monastery under the Rule of Saint Columcille on the isle of Lindisfarne, which became known as Holy Island.  Holy Island is a tidal island and is seperated from the mainland at high tide. It is still considered a holy place today and many visitors flock there, often finding 'inner peace'.
