Basic Facts About Me

I find Metal Detecting a Great way of Getting out and away from it all.
I'm often out in the fields and fresh air in my spare time, with just the sounds of the birds and farm animals, though some of the cows and horses can be a bit inquisitive if they happen to be about.

Iv'e been out in all weathers, Snow, Heavey Rain, blazeing sun and frost. I usually have a flask of hot coffee and some sandwiches in my backpack.

I first got into Metal Detecting in about 1990 when my 12 year old daughter asked me for a Metal Detector for Christmas, After Scratching my head for a while i drove about trying to find where i can find one, In the end did find where i can buy one, It was a Beachcomer 4, That cost £90 at the time.

After Christmas i decided to go up to a mountain top to where i think i lost some old pennies and ha-pennies when i was about 12 to 14 years of age to give it a try out, we were laying about under an old oak tree, after a couple of sweeps woe and behold, i had a signal, i dug in and there were my 3 pennies and 2 ha-pennies that i lost 32 years earlier.

From then on i had the bug, we tried it on the beaches in the summer, only found a few coins and a gold finger ring, when i started finding, my daughter always wanted it back,
i was a bit green in those days, and didn't know how to use it or sweep properly, or how to read the beach or land, But over the years i improved my techniques and have found a whole load of things.

A year or two after Starting out(about1994) i was on a Bus trip to old Trafford, I was reading a copy of THE TREASURE HUNTING magazine, and was spotted By Dave Phillips who was a Member of The RHONDDA Metal Detecting Club, he introduced himself and Invited me to the club where iv'e been a member ever since.

I'm also a member of F.I.D (The Federation of Independant Detectorists) who arrange a £5,0000 Public liability Insurance for us, and supply cards offering a free search for anybody who has lost anything metalic in our areas.

About My Hobby

About My Hobby,
Metal Detecting for me sets out a new challenge every time i go out, To see if i can find old or modern metal objects in the ground or in the sand that has been lost or deposited over the years.
Hopefully made of preciouse metals. eg finger rings, and coins, badges, jewelry weapons and tools from different ages.

There is also the fresh air and exersize to be enjoyed. Plus the insite into History i get when researching my finds.

There are some people who'd rather us leave these items in the ground, only to be destroyed by the Plough and Acid soil conditions.
Some of my images will show some of this damage.
A lot of Copper, Bronze, & Brass coins and artifacts have been eaten away beyond recognition by the acids in the ground, and also damaged by the plough.
Surly, it must be better to be able to rescue them from these hazzards, and let them be available for all to see what coins, badges, rings, tools ect that our Ancesters used to use.
And also to report the more important items to the Museums so as they can examine, preserve and record them.

When we are out on the beaches in the summer we are often approached by people asking if we can find their lost money or items of jewellery, which we readily do and are usually pretty succesfull in finding them if they know the area in which they lost them, sometimes the items are a few feet, or even yards away from where they'd thought they were lost and had been searching themselves.

we are often asked to search for things that the farmers have lost as well,
we are a kind of free watchman when we are out in the fields, keeping away any predetors or rustlers.
Reporting any dead or injured lifestock, untangling sheep that have been caught up in barbed wire, fences or brambles,
Turning over sheep we find that are on there back, they can't upright themselves and will die in a couple of hrs without help,
and reporting cattle or sheep that have got out onto the roads or other land,
iv'e just reported back to a farmer now, that some of his sheep had got onto the local golf club greens dohh, i hope he got there before they had done any damage, could cost him a lot in repair fees and good will,

I was invited by Radio Wales in June this year, (2006) to record a half hr programme about my Metal Detecting, the first half was out on a farm, with the second half being at the Rhondda Club,
That went great and was fun to do,
Mark Lodwick f.l.o. from the N.M.G.W. e-mailed me to thank me, and to say how good he thought it was, and said it would do us a lot of good in the hobby.

January 2007 Brought me 3 more radio interviews on metal detecting, 2 on BBC Radio 2 out in strong winds, and 1 on Radio Wales. Radio Bangor in North Wales wanted me to do one in Welsh for them on their programme, but i had to decline that one as i'm not a welsh speaker.
Both Jerremy Vine from BBC Radio 2, and Melanie Dole from Radio Wales said they have looked through these pages and were very impressed by them.

See LInks for Pics.
There are only 3 links in this page, thats all i was allowed, but iv'e added more links to the other pages, i couldn't get back to the bottom of the earlier pages to add later ones but have included more in the later pages,
there are 14 pages in all.
I have now made a page of all my links for the 3rd link.

They may also be of help to anybody who are trying to identify some of their finds.
I originally built these pages soley for my own use, to catalogue my finds, but was urged to make them public, after thinking about it i have now made them public.
i thought a lot of people who are interested in our past would benefit from seeing some of the historical items that they may never get to see otherwise.
I hope you find them interesting.

Thanks for your time
Alan
