There are two elements to the theory test. The first is a series of 50 multiple choice questions covering a wide range of driving topics. You must answer 43 correctly to pass. You have 40 minutes in which to complete the multiple choice part of the test.
The second element is a hazard perception test which is a series of video clips showing sceenes from everyday driving on roads. Here you need to spot the hazrds as they develope. The test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You need to respond by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score. To pass this element you must score 44 out of a possible 75 marks.
In order to achieve an over all pass you must pass both elements of the test. If you fail one part but pass the other you will not pass the test. The current cost of sitting this test is £28.50. (as at 01/2008).
