Greatest of the Dwarf-halls, the mansion and folk-home of Durin`s Folk, carved by Durin the first early in the First Age in the caves overlooking Azanulbizar. Early in the Second Age, Mithril was discovered in Khazad-dum. In TA 1980, the Dwarves, while extending their Mithril-mine, released the Balrog hidden beneath Barazinbar. About 2480 Sauron began to keep Orcs in Khazad-dum. In January 3019, the company of the Ring (and Gollum) passed through Khazad-dum, and Gandalf slew the Balrog in a series of battles which ruined the Chamber of Mazarbul, Durin`s Bridge, The Endless Stair, and Durin`s Tower. The Dwarvish Kingdom of Khazad-dum included Azanulbizar as well as the halls within the mountains. Except for Balin, all the Kings of Khazad-dum were also King`s of Durin`s Folk. The Elvish name for Khazad-dum was Moria.
