This is me in 1963, outside the house where I was born in 1944. The day before my birth was quite an eventful one for my mother, it was, obviously, during the latter part of WW2. When the air raid sirens went my mother was usually in the habit of hiding under the kitchen table with my older brother George, but the day before I was born she made for the air raid shelter in the garden, taking George and the dog. Our dog refused to go inside and sat on the top "keeping guard". Mum locked the door, and waited, there was a whooshing noise and she lost conciousness. When she came too, the door was still locked with the dog inside! The house was a mess, no roof, no glass in the windows, with a lot of damage to their possessions. The midwife had been telling mum for months that she was expecting twins, and had even got her two coupon books, for two babies. Next day, in the sitting room, with no windows and a howling blizzard outside, I was born. When older I checked all the records to see where the V1 Rocket had landed, but to this day I have found no record of one. While mum was alive I used to wind her up about this, telling her it was an Alien Space Ship that had landed and swopped her twins for me, I was an Alien baby. At one point I think she was almost convinced!
My parents were Lilian Emily Wild and Ernest Charles Cook. If you fancy having a browse through my ancestors and their families click HERE
My hobbies as I grew, apart from making a thorough nuisance of myself and getting as grubby as possible, were fishing, photography and motorbikes. I took up racing in Production races at Brands Hatch, Silverstone, and Snetterton in the 1962 My evenings were spent either at the Dutch House on what was locally know as the Mad Mile near Sidcup, and Johnson's Cafe on the A20 in West Kingsdown, which is now a Night Club. I was part of a large group of rockers who enjoyed going for weekend and day trips to the seaside. During this time I took quite a lot of photographs, and thought it would be good to share them with you.
