About Special Olympics:

Our Club was formed in 1999 and is affiliated to the Southern Region of Special Olympics, Great Britain.
Special Olympics was originally created in 1968 in America by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Executive Vice President of the Joseph P Kennedy Jr. Foundations.
In 1998 Special Olympics celebrated 30 years in existence while Special Olympics GB celebrated their 20th anniversary.
In 20,000 communities around the world, for 365 days a year, Special Olympics provides sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic - type sports for children and adults, from 8 to 80 years of age with some form of learning disability.

Our mission is ................

To provide training 48 weeks in each year - to encourage fitness, commitment and discipline through sport.

To provide as many Special Olympic athletes with the opportunity to participate, train and compete in as wide a variety of sports and events as possible.

To provide quality coaching.

To help athletes develop social skills and build relationships through the interaction and team spirit of their sports training and competition.

To provide athletes with the experience of new cultures when travelling abroad.

To encourage athletes to compete and participate rather than have an emphasis on winning.

To promote the inclusion of people with a learning disability in mainstream sport.

In Guernsey we are represented by the Guernsey Council for Disability Sport as part of the
States of Guernsey commitment to supporting sport for all people, irrespective of their disability.
We are also registered as a charity with the Association of Guernsey Charities (01481 - 721526/235851).

We are constantly looking for new blood to support our work in Guernsey and would welcome the opportunity to speak to any individual/group who may, in whatever way, be able to provide time in supporting our activities.
There are many ways of providing support, from coaching a particular sport to making  cups of tea at an event - we will match your skills to our needs!!!
Financial support is vital to our work as well and we are extremely grateful to the following organisations who have provided the necessary funding for our athletes to participate in their choosen sports.
