WHO ARE WE?

A group of writers who meet once a month in the centre of Bolton, Lancashire (UK) for readings, discussions, workshops and visits.
Members' interests include poetry, fiction, scriptwriting, factual writing - in fact, almost everything you can do with the written word!
Newcomers are always welcome at our informal meetings, and there's no commitment to join - but if you do, you'll also receive our regular Newsletter.
We run occasional COMPETITIONS for poetry and short stories (see below for details of the 2008 competition!).
We also publish a twice-yearly magazine, CURRENT ACCOUNTS - follow the link at the foot of this page.

Wednesday 7 May 2008: A workshop on improving your reading and performance skills, using excerpts from plays - as a preparation for writing your own dramatic dialogues. This session will be led by Jolyon Coombs.

ASSIGNMENT
For the May meeting: write a poem in 5 - 6 stanzas. It must have a specific rhyme scheme as follows: Line 1 of Stanza 1 rhymes with Line 1 of each stanza following. Line 2 must not rhyme with line 1 but all the second lines must rhyme with each other. This continues for the other lines of the stanzas. I.e. a rhyme scheme of a b c d/ a b c d/ a b c d/ etc. Your poem can be on any subject. Bring it to the May meeting for reading and review.

Poems: up to 40 lines, any subject and style. Judge: Linda Chase Linda Chase is an American poet, living in Manchester, who teaches at Manchester Metropolitan University and runs Poets and Players. Publications - These Goodbyes, Fatchance Press, 1995; with Carcanet - The Wedding Spy, 2001 and Extended Family, 2006
Cash Prizes: 1st prize, £70; 2nd, £40; 3rd, £25. Plus: Sweetens Bookshop Prize: £30.00 book token for the best poem by a local author (from Bolton & Bury) All winning entries will be published in the internationally circulating "Current Accounts" magazine and will be considered for inclusion in the new "Bolton Anthology". Some commended entries may also be published at the editors' discretion. A free copy of "Current Accounts" will be sent to each entrant whose work is published. CONDITIONS: * Poems must be in English, must be unpublished, and must not have won a prize in any other competition. * They must be typed or word-processed, with the title at the top of the first page, but the entrant's name must not appear on the poem itself. * A completed entry form must be enclosed with each entry or set of entries. * Entry fees: £3.00 sterling for the first entry, £2.00 for each subsequent entry by the same person. (Cheques payable to "Bank Street Writers".) Winners will be notified by 1st June 2008 Winning entries and selected commended entries will be published in "Current Accounts" magazine in Autumn, 2008 No person may receive more than one prize. The judges' decisions will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Manuscripts will not be returned - please keep a copy. Entrants whose post code begins with "BL" are eligible for the "local author" prize. Please enclose an s.a.e. marked "R" if you wish to receive details of the results.
