Welcome to Fife

The parish of Ceres and Springfield is located in north east Fife, an attractive, rural part of the east of Scotland. Our nearest towns are Cupar (the county town of Fife) and St Andrews (the "home of golf" and location of Scotland's oldest university). The city of Dundee lies to the north of the River Tay, only 15 miles away. Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, is 45 miles to the south. In addition to the villages of Ceres and Springfield, the parish also includes the smaller communities of Craigrothie, Pitscottie, Baldinnie, Chance Inn and Stratheden Hospital.

Transport

The nearest railway stations are at Leuchars, Cupar and Springfield on the main Aberdeen-Edinburgh line. Leuchars is served by all trains (including GNER and Virgin Rail express services to England). Cupar is served mostly by ScotRail services to Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Dundee and Aberdeen. Very few trains stop at Springfield station. For train times please telephone National Rail Enquiries on 08457484950 or visit the online timetable.

Hotels

Accommodation is available locally at Meldrum's Hotel, Main Street, Ceres (tel 01334 828286) and through B&Bs. More information and booking is available through Tourist Information Centre, 70 Market Street, St Andrews (tel 01334 472021).

Ceres

Ceres is one of the most attractive and historic villages in Scotland. The village is famous for its statue of the "Provost" and for having the world's oldest Highland Games (founded in 1314). In addition to the Parish Church (founded circa 900, rebuilt 1805-6), there is a "Spar" shop in Main Street (with post office), the butcher's shop, several antique shops, the primary school, Meldrum's Hotel, the Ceres Inn, a tearoom, the Wemyss Ware Pottery and shop in Kirkbrae, the Fife Folk Museum in the High Street (closed winters), the Hill of Tarvit Mansion House (owned by the National Trust for Scotland, closed winters) and Alwyn House (the training centre for blind people, operated by the RNIB). The population is over 1,000. For more information about the history of Ceres please click here.

Springfield

Springfield has its origins in the Victorian linen industry. Today Springfield has a population of nearly 1,000. In addition to the Parish Church (built 1861-2), there are two shops, a post office, a primary school, village hall, the Springfield Tavern and the nearby Stratheden Hospital.
