The structure of the cup in 1881 was still such that all participating teams had to enter from the first round but there were huge gulfs in the standard of the weaker teams to the best sides and it showed in the results.
Cup holders Clapham destroyed Finchley 15-0 to notch up the biggest victory of the first round and send out a clear message that they intended keeping their cup. Their reward in round two was a bye before being drawn at home to Reading in round three. Reading had already seen off Hotspurs 5-3 in round one and ran the holders close before going down 2-1. That set up a classic fourth round tie with an Upton Park side who had enjoyed an 8-1 first round victory over Mosquitoes. The two sides shared nine goals with the holders scraping through by the odd goal to earn the first of the six quarter final spots.
Old Etonians were another side who hopelessly outmatched their first round opponents, Brentwood. Harry Goodhart helped himself to a hat-trick in their 10-0 away win. Hendon meanwhile easily beat St Peter's Institute 8-1 and Herts Rangers saw off Barnes 6-0 before becoming the Etonians second & third round victims before the Etonians booked their quarter final place with a win over Grey Friars.
High scores were not restricted to the southern sides either. Leading northern club Darwen cruised past Brigg 8-0 with three apiece for Rostron and Moorhouse while Sheffield narrowly defeated Blackburn Olympic 5-4 before Darwen inflicted a second round 5-1 hiding with another Rostron goal. Blackburn Rovers defeated Sheffield Providence 6-2 while Turton beat Britannia Recreation Brigg 5-0 before both fell victim to Sheffield Wednesday. Darwen again showed their class when their quarter final place was secured with another five goals against Wednesday.
Acton needed a replay before disposing of Kildare 5-0 while Great Marlow beat Clarence 6-0. Acton's run ended in round two though while Great marlow fought through to round four but lost a battle for a quarter final spot to Romford.
Old Carthusians were playing in the cup for only the second time but kicked off in fine style with a 7-0 win over Saffron Waldon at Charterhouse. Dreadnought faired slightly better there in round two, coming away only losing 1-5. In round three Old Carthusians recieved a bye and can't have been full of too much joy when they were drawn to play a Royal Engineers side who had just knocked six past Glasgow Rangers without reply. Against the odds it was the Carthusians who came through for a quarter final spot.
Stafford Road of Wolverhampton were unheard of before their first round 7-0 win over Spilsbury but were making headlines by the time of their second round replay 7-1 win over Grantham. A bye saw them face Aston Villa, who had beaten Wednesbury Strollers 5-3 in round one, for the remaining quarter final place with Stafford Road coming out on top.
The first quarter final was another one sided affair as Darwen made light of their tie with Romford. Kirkham, Marshall, Mellor and Rostron all helped themselves to hat-tricks in a 15-0 victory. A fortnight later the two remaining ties were a little tighter as Old Etonians ended Stafford Roads cup dreams 2-1. The holders also bowed out 1-3 at Old Carthusians.
Old Etonians were the only one of the semi final trio to have previously reached the final and as luck would have it, they were the ones given a bye into the final while Old Carthusians and Darwen would have to earn their first final place. The northerners were outclassed at the Oval as Hansell, Todd, Wynyard and Vincent all struck in a 4-1 win for Old Carthusians.
THE FINAL
For the first time the Oval witnessed an old boys final as the former pupils of Eton lined up against the former pupils of Charterhouse. The Old Etonians were the slight favourites and were making their fourth appearance at the Oval with four of the side who had been in their cup winning 1879 team. Captain, Arthur Kinnaird was making a record seventh appearance in the final and was bidding for a fourth winners medal.
Old Carthusians had never been beyond the second round before 1881 but three of their players had final experience, albeit all losing ones. James Prinsep had been in Clapham's losing 1879 team while captain Edward Parry and Todd had been team mates in Oxford's losing 1877 team.
Old Carthusians relished the underdogs tag and controlled the game from start to finish to record the most one sided victory to date. The Etonians were simply outclassed. Page struck the first for Old Carthusians, Wynyard added a second before Edward Parry capped off a captains performance with a third and killer goal.
The old boys final was the only appearance for Old Carthusians but it was an emphatic one. By the 90's the Carthusians had withdrawn from the cup to enter the amateur cup instead, going on to win that competition on two occasions.
Once again the F A cup had to contend with a competitor, This time in the shape of the first Irish cup final on the same day in Belfast. The Irish final upstaged the F A cup final in terms of attendance Just as Scotland had done a few years earlier but Irish football was unable to compete with the English game as Scotland was and before the turn of the century the best Irish players were moving across the sea to play in England. Irish fans stuck with their local game but when travel became cheaper and easier in the 1950's they too voted with their feet and, whenever possible spent their cash in English & Scottish  turnstiles. That has made life hard for Irish clubs who live off the scraps and diehards much as many English and Scottish third division clubs do today but in both Dublin and Belfast there is still one game every season that brings the fans out in droves, the two Nation's domestic F A cup finals.
