Born 23-06-1867
Robert Holmes was a member of Preston's greatest ever team, The Invincibles of the late Victorian era. In 1888 Holmes and his team mates had been so confident of victory over West Brom that they asked to be photographed with the cup before the game so they would look clean in their kit. The request was rightly refused and Preston were duly humbled. the following year though The title Invincibles was given to Holmes and co when they won the first league title without losing a game and added the cup without conceeding a goal. Holmes also went on to win a second championship medal the following season and was honoured with the captaincy of England on three of the seven occasions that he swapped the Preston white for England white.
