Alf Milward was born on September 12th 1870 in Great Marlow in Buckinghamshire, the second son of John Milward. He attended Sir William Borlase’s grammar school in the town. At the time the school had a growing reputation for football which today had sadly been lost in favour of rugby but Alf remains one of the school’s most famous sporting sons. He played firstly for the school and then joined the old boys team the Old Borlasians before stepping up to the premier club in the area, Great Marlow. In 1888 Alf was recruited by Everton as the Merseysiders embarked on the first season in the football league. Milward’s greatest days came here, winning the league championship in 1891 and gaining four England caps, scoring three goals. Alf scored a hat-trick in Everton’s biggest ever victory, 11-2 over Derby in the F A cup in 1890. He spent nine years at Everton making 224 appearances and scoring 96 goals including two in Everton’s run to the final in 1893 from his position of outside left, and three times in their 1897 cup run. Everton lost both finals and any chance of a winners medal looked to have gone when Milward stepped down to non league football with New Brighton Tower in 1897. Alf helped his new club gain league status in his first season and helped the club to within three points of promotion to the top flight in his second. In 1899 though he moved on again, going back to non league football with Southampton. His first cup action for the Saints was to return to haunt his former club, Everton, scoring twice in a 3-0 win before adding two more goals as the non league club reached the final. Yet again though Milward left with a losers medal although he did finish the season as the club’s top scorer in the Southern league. In 1901 Milward moved to New Brompton, later to be known as Gillingham, where he spent two years before retiring from the game in 1903.
