The Wessex Constitutional Convention

Wessex - a thriving region

From Reading in the east to Plymouth in the west, from Bournemouth in the south to Gloucester in the north, Wessex is a dynamic and very distinct region, where there is a growing demand for a parliament with the same level of powers as that in Scotland. The Wessex Constitutional Convention was launched on 19 May 2001, in Exeter.
Wessex, the cradle of England, is today a region with growing self confidence. The existence of over 500 businesses with the word 'Wessex' in their name proves that it is already a force to be reckoned with. The gold wyvern, the mythical beast of Wessex, can often be seen displayed around our villages, towns and cities and forms the focal point of the regional/national flag. Wessex offers a badge of identity to which we all can relate.

Towards our parliament

Wessex makes sense. Some of those in power already know this. Recent announcements include the setting up of a Wessex regional rail franchise for local train services west of London. And with rail services in Wessex under one control we can begin to look at expanding the network for the benefit of Wessex, including the rebuilding of our spine route from Bournemouth to Bath and links to the seaside resorts currently bereft of modern transport - Ilfracombe, Lyme Regis, Sidmouth and many others. This is just one example of how regional government can do things that national government simply does not have the will to.
But to really get things moving we need a parliament with a level of powers that will allow us to do this.

The government of the UK believes in regional parliaments and assemblies where there is a local demand. The demand in Wessex is strong and growing!

How you can help

It doesn't matter what your party allegiance (if you have one!) is. The Wessex Constitutional Convention is an all party pressure group with the following aims

1. To achieve the broadest consensus on the form of self-government appropriate for Wessex.
2. To campaign for the implementation of that consensus at the earliest possible opportunity.
3. To oppose the continuing partition of Wessex between the 'South-West' and 'South-East' 'regions'.
4. To promote as Wessex the area comprising the eight traditional counties of Berkshire, Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, subject to addition or subtraction according to popular wish.
