30 years with Dalmatians
My first association with the breed was as a child, at my local riding school. "Josie" was small, wiry, blue eyed but prettily marked and a fantastic character. Like many Dalmatians, she had enormous stamina! Of course, she followed the horses, both when they were ridden and when drawing the carriage which gave rides along the sea-front at Redcar, in North Yorkshire. I have been smitten with Dalmatians (and horses!) ever since!

Showing
My own Dalmatians have principally been kept as companions, pets and for their instinctive affinity with horses. However, as a professional horseman,  who has shown & judged Arabian horses all over the world, I encouraged my first wife to begin showing Dalmatians and it all began with a bitch puppy from the famous Olbero line, CH.Olbero Onsdag Moln of Theakston (LUCY.) She became the first of four 'Theakston', UK Champions and she is the ancestor of many others, chiefly through her son, CH Theakston Tamerlan, sired by BEN. Together, father and son have exerted considerable influence on the breed, in this country and overseas.

Successes
My involvement with the Dalmatian Breed-Clubs increased over the years and I am honoured to have judged at the British Dalmatian Club Open Show twice and many others. I also edited the Carriage Dog Chronicle for a time and as something of an admitted 'pedigree-student', I have always taken a great interest in bloodlines.

I was able to purchase a fantastic male puppy of my own, CH. Beaumore Night Owl of Olbero (BEN), bred by Mrs. Beasley. In my ownership, he became a well known champion and a sire-extraordinaire. When mated to Lucy, he produced a series of exceptional dogs, including the wonderful CH Theakston Tamerlan, possibly best known as the sire of CH Salsusa Black Jack, himself a superlative sire of both UK and International Champions.

BEN (Night Owl) sired several major champions, including the overseas top winners, INT.CH. Knight of Gold at Theakston & INT.CH.Gem's Delight at Theakston, both of whom have contributed to a dynasty of successful Dalmatians in Scandanavia.

Then there is Paddy Lockett's CH.Stedfast Wait Watchher who is contemporarily one of New Zealand's top winners and who was sired by BEN - years after his death, by the use of frozen semen.

One of my personal U.K. favorites, again sired by BEN, was Valentine Black's very special, CH. Boval Beginning and her quality, full brother CH. Boval Boomerang.

Today, I still own descendants of BEN - a dog (Elaridge Emperor of Beaumore) "Ellis" who is shown in the photo' above and a gorgeous bitch (Plymcrest Premiera at Beaumore) "Sophie" bred by Mrs.Sharon Mutton - from Valentine's BOVAL lines.

At the Present Time
I have only a limited time to show my dogs now but Ellis has been shown three times so far and was Best Dog at the BDC Open Show in 2006, he won at Windsor & 2nd at National Dog Show. They both love the horses and they are the greatest of companions. I hope to show them occasionally and perhaps breed a litter in due course, as they seem ideally suited, both physically and psychologically.

It is with some amazement that I look back at over thirty years with these wonderful dogs. Apart from furnishing me with an absorbing pastime, they have introduced me to some of the finest people imaginable, from all around the world. Most importantly, Dalmatians have remained in my heart as the very best of all the breeds. Frances too has been captivated by them and her mother, Nadia Howard-Price (Montfleurie Miniature Poodles) simply adores Ellis.
