This is a picture of my garden taken in June 2002- the time of year it looks at its best. I moved to my current house in October 1997 then this was a patch of weeds growing in a very thin layer of top soil (2 - 6 Inches) spread over sand, gravel and builders rubble.
The soil was so poor that in the firsr year even calendulas and nastursiums were stunted. Even though 1998 was a relatively (for the 1990's) wet and cold summer the soil was so free draining that many plants were killed by drought.
Over the years large amounts of organic material added to the soil to improve water retention, increase fertility and build a reasonable depth of top soil. a granular fertiliser is applied once or twice a year.
The garden was intended to appear natural and be semi-wild. A number of annual and biennial self seeding species suitable for free draining sandy soil were introduced and allowed to spread amongst the perennial plants and shrubs.
