The Naming Day (Words)
Elsewhere...
On Sunday 11th August 2002 a hundred or so of Felix’s closest family and friends gathered together to celebrate his arrival in this world. This page contains some of the lovely words that were written and spoken on that day.
THE WISHES
THE SPEECHES
After Felix's chosen family spoke some words, we asked everyone to write a wish for Felix and attach it to a helium balloon. Then we all went outside. Felix’s mum sang a little song, at the end of which everybody let go of their balloon, and we all watched them drift up into the sky, wiping tears from our eyes.

Luckily we persuaded everyone to write their wishes down twice, so we had a record of what they wrote. Below you will see all the lovely wishes for Felix.

Big Love from all of us... we'll try to make the world a better place for you.    X
Mike Killian.

To Felix,
MY WISH...
If I had a wish
I'd wish for peace & joy
for every animal, bird & fish,
for every girl & boy....
There would be no fighting,
there would be no war,
everyone would be happy,
for years to come, & more....

Emma, Mike & Saira, and Katy, Harold, Bysshe & Atalanta agreed to be Felix’s chosen family, and they all said a few words.
It just so happened that Katy, Harold & Bysshe left one of their scripts behind on a table, so I took the liberty of transcribing it here, as the words are so poetic:

[Harold]
Felicitations Felix: here’s to your start Felix, your beginning becoming what you will be on all the lush trajectories of life….

[Bysshe]
F is for fun
E is for eager
L is for love from a lion
I is for important
X is for excellent
I like Felix. I think he is a really cute baby.
I will be a brother and cousin and friend to him.
Atalanta and I will look after him very well when he is bigger, and show him all the tricks.

[Harold]
You’re already on the blocks ready to give ‘em hell, and I don’t just mean Ally and Clare. A start and you’re away, crying crawling, cursing clambering cruising climbing, just reaching that one step higher, teetering on tiptoes to see what they’re up to, to join in, join them, as we’ve all joined you here, for you, today, baby. I hope you won’t let this starting pistol startle you.
Lucky here? I think so, given your choice of parents
Happy here? I hope so, getting ready to get going
Not a step yet on the roads you’ll travel, but we’ll be here, and there and everywhere, just over there, third tree on the left, not lurking eactly, but rather casting half an eye, a helping hand, to pluck the fruit, to help you on your ever changing road, past the rocks, through the forest, across the river, over the hills and far away. As you traverse all those terrains, you’ll learn to ride your luck even before you know that it’s written into your name in latin. Ave felix, ad excursus, semper felix.

[Katy]
It’s a real honour to be asked to be a part of Felix’s family, and a wonderful compliment to the family that Harold and I have created.
We spent some time thinking about the obligations of this invitation to be family – to help him on his journey, to offer advice and guidance, to not turn away when that advice is ignored, to love him without judgement, and to protect and support him and the decisions and choices he makes in his life. But burning fiercely through these thoughts is the privilege of being asked to witness and participate in Felix’s life, the joy and pride of watching a young life develop and embrace the world, to the hopes and dreams that children remind you of and to the brute, raw, ever-present consuming love.
Here’s to you, Clare and Ally, our friends, and to your beautiful son, Felix. Welcome to your family Felix, may we be everything that you need.

Felix’s mum left her script behind too:

“I just want to say a few words. First, the lyrics from a song, which I think say all that needs to be said about parenthood:

Your children are not your children
They are the sons and the daughters of life’s longing for itself
They come through you but they are not from you
And though they are with you
They belong not to you.
You can give them your love but not your thoughts
They have their own thoughts
You can house their bodies but not their souls
For their souls dwell in a place of tomorrow
Which you can not visit, not even in your dreams
You can strive to be like them
But you can not make them just like you
Strive to be like them
But you can not make them just like you.

Felix is not our child.
He is everybody’s child, but most of all he is his own child.
Today, we are giving Felix Anthony Sudbery to all of you.
So you can help us to help him to be everything that he wants to be.”

After these words and more from Emma and Mike & Saira, we asked everyone to write a wish for Felix and attach it to a helium balloon. Then we all went outside. Felix’s mum sang the following words, at the end of which everybody let go of their balloon, and we all watched them drift up into the sky, wiping tears from our eyes.

In C Major (D denotes the D above C major, and D’ is an octave above that):
Felix we name you
GG    F   Eb D    C
Felix    we  give    you
C’C’    D’  Bb A   G
With blessings and love
G       C’C’       C    Bb
With wishes above
C       GG      C F
We send you on  a   journey
C    G      G    A  G   E D C
Our gift to you is life
E     D    C  D   E  C
(Actually it wasn’t sung in C major at all, it was sung in F major)

Later on the grand and great-grand parents proposed some toasts.
Felix's Nan said this:

Felix Anthony, now that you're here and we can all love you, we wish you good fortune in everything you do. May all the powers of earth and heaven watch over you and protect you; may you live and grow in grace and health, and may you be as happy as your name.

A POEM (by Nan):

Felix Today

Felix, today you are just twelve weeks old;
You change like sunlight with each passing hour
You open like the petals of a flower
And day by day your qualities unfold.

You find your self in everything you do
Your blueprint holds the person you will be
You are the things you touch and taste and see
You reach and clutch the world that cradles you.

Be blithe and bonny, little Sabbath lad!
Be loved, our small beloved, as you grow;
Be sunny-natured, fortunate, and glad,
Be happy Felix everywhere you go.

These are the wishes that for you we frame;
This is your naming day, and this your name.
