Christian Pilgrimage.
Going on pilgrimage is a common theme in many religious faiths. Pilgrimage has been a part of Christianity since the 3rd or 4th Century. At first, Christians travelled across the Roman Empire to visit Palestine and the places described in the Bible. Later, they made pilgrimages to the places where the martyrs had died, or where their bones were buried.
During the middle ages Rome was a favourite place for pilgrimage. Jerusalem was another favourite destination, but there were times when the Muslims made the Pilgrimage to Jerusalem almost impossible. This was one of the reasons for the Crusades.
There were also many smaller, more local shrines and pilgrim centres. The chapel dedicated to Mary, at Penrhys in South Wales, was one of these.
