OUSA A420 CONFERENCE

This is a student conference, run and moderated by them
 - a kind of mega self help group.

I do recomend that you look in and contribute

It's a great place to exchange information on films being shown locally or on TV and any other event

You may be able to borrow/buy/share those elusive videos

It's a community for you to share your woes with durimg the Project!

You have to be on FirstClass - so if you don't know about that (you must have had details mailed to you) look up on Internet page here

Once on FC you have to through a bit of a maze -
on the desk top you will see the OU shield -
 click on that and then
OUSA Study Room/OUSA Study Room Doors/A Arts room/OUSA A420 folder

You can then bookmark/add to favourites or create a shortcut, or put a copy (alias) on your FirstClass desktop

Hope you make it! If not ask the LTS conference team!
UNIVERSITY & HE COLLEGE LIBRARIES

The OU cannot  provide a full academic library for you (well not unless you are near Milton Keynes!) and for work at this level you cannot really rely just on the course materials and set books plus your local public library. Remember? - it's research!

So I cannot recomend too strongly that you join as an external borrower for six months - or at least the four you will be working on the project. It will be the summer recess so they will be only too happy to collect a joining fee from you - and it should be fairly quiet. Chat up the relevant subject librarian and you will find they can be very helpful.

At Open Libr@ry you will find details of your local ones - but check
out the ones that have a good stock of the books & journals that
you need. You can look through the catalogues online. Remember to check out videos - pretty certain you can't borrow those!

You should also ask about the CD-ROM Film Index International - that is a truly great research tool - it lists articles on every film, director etc. Of course you then have to find the journal!

Do read through the mailing about this and get the passwords

You should try out ROUTES
and NEW! You can now go on SAFARI

There are two immediate uses for our course -

1 Via EBSCO and/or Web of Science (Arts & Humanities) you can locate articles that have real value academically. On EBSCO , many are actually online for you to read.

2 You can locate Universites and HE Colleges that you can join - (see para on that)

Screen is the leading academic film studies journal.

The annual conference is held at Glasgow University 28-30 June.

This is the BIG ONE !!

Any serious film scholar should become a member.
It's a reference library so you can't borrow - so go prepared - you can look up their book catalogue online (see internet page)

Use their SIFT database to locate resources, articles etc.
Also ask about Special Collections - might be crucial research material for your project - might inspire it!
But email them first about these as they have to be brought out specially
