Her ambition was to start an animal shelter in Liverpool with a non destruction
policy. At that time the only animal home was the RSPCA where animals
were kept for seven days then destroyed . After many years fundraising
and with the proceeds of the sale of her house, East Lodge Farm was purchased
and set up as an animal sanctuary.Nowadays it is a very busy shelter,
there is kennelling for 70 dogs, facilities for up to 100 cats, a busy
wildlife and small animal unit, aviaries and a small farm animal area.
Over the years several horses were rescued and kept on nearby land but
it was always Lesleys dream to have a horse and pony sanctuary. In 2002
that dream came true with the acquisition of a cottage with 20 acres of
land in North Wales. Lesley and the horses moved there and now there are
22 horses and ponies in residence. There is also a small block of 5 kennels
and a cattery which can hold up to 70 cats.As well as this 4 pet sheep
and 4 potbellied pigs live here permanently. 4 part time staff work have
been employed to help Lesley care for the animals..
The Merseyside shelter still continues but is now run by a manager and
several full time staff.
We
are pleased to welcome you at Freshfields Wales, where you can see all
of our animals between the hours of 10am -12noon (7 days a week) other
times by appointment only. (Because we also need to set aside time for
caring for the animals).
