ABOUT OUR GIG CLUB

Pendeen Gig Club is a true community gig racing club. Our main boat, Avarack, is named after a reef of rocks on the coast near Pendeen lighthouse. The boat was built at Bissoe near Truro as a direct result of Pendeen youngsters winning a fun gig event in 1998. Local enthusiasm achieved Lottery funding and Avarack was launched in October 2000 for the use of the local community. She has been seen at the London River Race, the Scillies World Championships and many local races ever since. Anyone is welcome to join us at our practice meetings (see below) whatever their rowing experience, including complete novices. We produce a monthly newsletter with details of our activities, which apart from rowing (obviously!) include various fund raising events like bar-b-q's, discos etc. In October 2007 we acquired a new GRP training gig, named Portheras after our local cove, through Awards for All Lottery funding; this has helped reduce "wear and tear" on Avarack.

MEETING SCHEDULE

Lighter evenings in March mean we will soon be back to 3 practice sessions a week. On Sundays, times vary so as to coincide as far as possible with high tide but we usually meet at either 10.30am or 2.30pm. Weekday sessions are on Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm. We usually row from the inshore lifeboat slipway in Newlyn harbour but please ring our club telephone number 01736786757 to confirm as we sometimes launch at Marazion instead if the tide is low.

RACES & OTHER EVENTS

The Scillies championships in early May will soon be upon us and we have high hopes of exceeding last year's improvements in our team positions. Then we will be looking forward eagerly to the rest of the race season. Apart from rowing, our social activities (we already have several planned over this year) will continue to help boost club funds.
