Glam Rock Australian (and New Zealand) Style
A big thanks to Glenn in Australia to bringing this to my attention, and for many of the pics on this page.

In Australia and New Zealand in the 70's there was an indiginous glam scene, where the artists were every bit as big in their native land as T.Rex and Slade were in the UK, though, with the exception of a few odd hits very few of these artists crossed over to the international market.

SHERBET are probably the best known Aussie glam act internationally, due to their worldwide hit 'Howzat'.  They had been having hits in their native land for several years before this, and lead singer DARYL BRAITHWAITE also enjoyed a number of solo hits during the group's lifetime.  By the time of their international success their sound had veered away from glam to a more M.O.R. direction.

SKYHOOKS reputedly adopted their bizarre costumes and make-up as a parody of glam, but it's doubtful that the public would have known the difference, and having established a successful image they stuck with it for a number of years.  Lead singer Graham Strachan also had solo hits under his nickname 'SHIRLEY'.  Along with Sherbet, Skyhooks were one of the biggest Australian bands of the 70's, but never crossed over to the international market.

The intriguingly monkiered WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE also hit big with 3 singles and 1 album.

RABBIT, HUSH and SUPERNAUT were more traditional glam bands, all achieving a string of hit singles, Hush enjoying their biggest hits with glam covers of 60's rock & roll hits such as 'Bony Moronie'.

The TED MULRY GANG (later shortened to T.M.G.) released the original version of 'Jump In My Car', covered in the UK by Chris Spedding, and a truly odd glam version of 'The Darktown Strutter's Ball'.

SPACE WALTZ were the biggest glam act to hail from New Zealand, enjoying several hits there.

Further artists from the antipodes deserving of mention include JOHN PAUL YOUNG (of 'Love is in the air' fame), STEVIE WRIGHT (formally lead singer with The Easybeats), SQUEEZE (no, not the UK new wave band), KUSH (fronted by the incredibly camp Jeff Duff, who recorded in the UK in the late 70's under the name Duffo), FINCH, FEATHER, PUSSYFOOT and RITZI.  Better known internationally were New Zealand's SPLIT ENZ, who had their start donning make-up and bizarre hairdos during the glam era.  The Australian JIGSAW are dealt with on the Glitter Rock page.
