George Cross
This award was so greatly appreciated that it is now displayed on the national flag.
The island of Malta was bombarded relentlessly from June 1940 until the end of 1942. During this time, during this time very little in the way of aid and supplies managed to get through and many servicemen and civilians gave their lives. Every community in Malta has its own war memorial, often listing civilians as well as the military.
The people of the tiny island of Malta were an example and an inspiration to the Allied countries during those uncertain early war years. The award of the George Cross was a welcome recognition of the part they played.
