p1b    15 Army officers sailed from Southampton by mail steamer Roslin Castle, Harlech Castle and Goorkha a few days before Christmas.
    The Harlech Castle left Southampton Dec. 22 with 8 officers, 303 men, 12 women and 17 children for Cape Town . Included were:
    Liverpool – 80 men
    1/KRR  – 164 men
    RAMC  – 20 men

    Col. Southey inspected the Kimberley Rifles Jan. 26, 1899 with 239 out of 256 being present. Long service medals were presented to Capt. A.J. Wright, Co. Sgt.-Maj. Fyvie, and Sgt. Richards.

p10c & d     Recruiting is being carried out for the Cape Peninsula Garrison Artillery. Recruiting is slow. 600 authorized but less than a third have answered the call.

p1a-d    Karri Davies is in Egypt on business and will proceed to China. Maj. Buchanan Riddell is to succeed Col. Forestier Walker in command of 1/KRR in South Africa . Col. Morgan Crofton, D.S.O. , A.A.G. is to retire from that post July 13. Col. J.J. Scott Chisholme gives up command of the 5/Lancers at Maritzburg, Aug. 12.  Col. H. Paget, C.B. retires from the 7/Hussars June 26.
Intended military forces for the Cape for 1899-1900 are: 2 Regts. Cavalry, 2 Cos. G.A., 3 Cos. F.A. and 1 Mountain Battery, 1 Fortress Co. R.E., 7 Inf. Bns. - about 7,000 Imperial  troops.
Jan. 1899. 27 sailing ships arrived this port, 12 British, 6 Norwegian, 3 German, 2 French, 2 Swedish, 1 Russian, 1 Italian.

p1a , b, & c    Maj. E.J. Carroll, Kaffrarian Rifles and Pte. M. Murray, Prince Albert’s Guard received Volunteer long service medal.  Among the passengers on Carisbrook Castle who left England on Saturday for the Cape is Mr. Wools Sampson. Mr. Henry Colenbrander was mauled by a lion and died in the Belingwe district.  Lt.-Col. Rowan Hamilton returned to the Cape by the Greek last Thursday.  The Royal Berkshire Regt, at Graham’s Town have received two Maxims.

p1--    The Carisbrook Castle took on a draft of 100 men, including Capt. Withycombe, Lts. J.B. Tulloch and G.C. Hall, to reinforce the troops at Mauritious. General W. Black retires. Capt. the Hon. Robert White (Jameson Raid) retires. Lt.-Col. Hall will succeed Col. Owen Hay as commander of artillery in Natal. Passengers on the Scott were Capt. C. Wilson and Mr. J. Smuts.

    The 2/King’s Royal Rifles will sail to-day for India in the Avoca.

The Arundel Castle left Cape Town for England Thursday night and will make an unusual stop at Mossamedes in about 4 days, They will land 35 settlers who have been in the Cape buying stock, implements, etc.  Maj. Murray, Lts. Bowen and Bingham, L. N. Lancashire Regt. in charge of Honor Guard for Visiting Matabele chiefs at Cape Town .

Morgan Crofton, D.S.O. sailed for England in the Tantallon Castle last Wednesday.

Baden-Powell, 5th Dragoon Guards; Capt. & Bt.  Maj.  Lord E.H. Cecil, DSO, GG; Lt.  Hon.  A.H.C. Hanbury Tracy, RHG; Maj. & Bt.  Lt.-Col.  E.A.H. Plumer, York & Lancaster Regt; Capt. & Bt.  Maj.  A.V. Jenner, DSO, RB; Capt. & Bt.  Maj.  A.F. Pilson, RDF; Capt.  H.  McMicking, RS; Capt. & Bt.  Maj.  W.D. Bird, RWS.
    Their duty will be to organize the residents as well as the police and local forces at various points on the frontier.

p13e    The 73 Battery, R.F.A., has been selected for service in South Africa .  It is the fifth under orders to proceed to South Africa in August, the others being the 18th, 20th, 62nd, and 75th.  Thirty machine- gun carriages were sent from the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, for shipment to South Africa .  They will be provided with ball cartridge (Mark IV) as used in the service rifle.

Foster, Ludlow, Atkinson, Walton, Lts. Pedlar and Richards.  The Dunottar Castle arrived at Cape Town on Tuesday, 25 July. Among the passengers were Maj. Lord E. Cecil, D.S.O. , and Col. Baden-Powell, and Lt. the Hon. A. Hanbury-Tracey. At East London a Mounted Rifle Club was formed. Capt. H.G.R. Lambert and Lt. R.A. Weare are members.

p2    Dateline 12 Aug.  Lourenco Marques.  The Reichstag brought 401 cases of cartridges for the Transvaal Government.  Dateline Lourenco Marques, Aug. 12, 2.30 p.m.  A consignment of war material for the Transvaal government that arrived by the Reichstag is being detained by the Portuguese authorities. Included were 15,000 rifles. Another report states the previous concerning the 15,000 rifles is without foundation.

p4    The Liverpool Regt. is being readied to embark in the Braemar Castle for Natal (Durban) and the Doune Castle is fitted for 200 troops, 158 Mules and 115 horses for Natal.The Braemar Castle will take 885 men of the Liverpool Regt and some details.     Dateline Durban, Aug. 14. The Doune Castle arrived with 123 horses, 158 mules, and baggage of the Liverpool Regt., Preserved meat, biscuits, bush wagons, Scotch carts, a Maxim, poles for river bridging.  The braemar Castle docked at 7.30 am with 700 officers and men of the Liverpool Rget.

    Earlier in the afternoon the Goth left Southampton for South Africa.  She will embark 1000 troops for Natal at Gibralter.

They will probably embark from Southampton on board the Union Company’s steamer Gaul for Natal. The 2nd Brigade Division R.F.A. to embark in about ten days for SA and the 1/Royal Sussex Regt. To be ready for the Mediterranian. The 14th Hussars and G and P Batteries of R.H.A. are under orders for SA.
    The 2/Royal Scots Fusiliers, 700 strong, left Chatham for Aldershot. The 2/ Loyal North Lancashire Regt., stationed at Dover is to depart for Malta to replace the 1/Border Regt. which is to embark for SA. The 2/Royal West Kent Regt. to Egypt to take the place of a battalion which is to embark for SA.

will carry 200 tons of war material. Brevet Col. Sir H. Rawlinson, 2/CG for SA on the Tantallon Castle as D.A.A.G. at Natal. 3/Grenadier Guards will embark at Royal Alber Docks instead of Southampton. Guards Brigade being made up of 2/Grenadier Guards, 3/Grenadier Guards, 2/ Coldstream Guards and 1/Scots Guards. Lt.-Col. Landon A.S.C. to the Cape.
    The Avoca left Royal Albert Dock yesterday for Egypt to embark 1/Royal Fusiliers, proceeding to SA via the Suez Canal. The Gaul will embark 1/Northumberland Fusiliers at Southampton on Saturday. The Sumatra will leave Royal Albert Dock on 20th inst. To embark the 1/Border Regiment at Malta and will go to the Cape via the Atlantic route. The Jelunga will leave 20th inst. For Crete to embark 2/Rifle Brigade and will go to SA via the Suez Canal. The Zibenyhla and the Zayathla are fitting at Liverpool to convey to SA the Field Artillery contingent from Aldershot and will probably embark at Southampton.

    Dateline Cape Town , Sept.  16.  The Royal Munster Fusiliers arrived on board the Arundel Castle at midnight last night.

Dateline Calcutta, 15 Sept.  The transport Purena will sail for SA on 18th  inst. with 2/Kings Royal Rifles on board; The Nurni will sail on 19th inst. with two companies of infantry and mules; the Hensada will sail on the 20th with an ordnance park and a British field hospital; and the Indian will sail on the 25th with the 1/Gloucester Regt.

p5a    The Gaul has been requisitioned by the War Office for carrying troops.  She is 400 feet long, 47 feet broad, and 31 feet deep.  She sailed from Southampton last Saturday with the following troops: 1/Northumberland Fusiliers, 26 officers, 2 warrant officers and 770 men; ASC, 8 officers, 4 warrant officers and 140 men; Army Ordnance and other Corps, 11 officers, 8 warrant officers and 82 men.

p3c.  Dateline Bombay 19 Sept.    The 21st Battery Field Artillery, with a section of the British Field Hospital, sailed last night in the Lalpoora for the Cape.

p4b,       The P. & O. transport Sumatra left the Royal Albert Docks yesterday with troops on board. She is taking the Royal West Sussex Regt. to Malta, where they will take the place of the 1/Border Regt. is to go to Natal. There were 20 Officers and nearly 600 men of the Sussex Regt. on board in addition to three officers of the 1/Border Regt., one officer of the 9th Lancers and one of the 19th Hussars. An additional 160 men of various small drafts from different regiments already stationed in Natal or the Cape.
    The chartered troopship Jelunga will complete embarcation of troops at Southampton today and will sail this afternoon. She takes out 55 officers, 3 ladies, 1047 of all ranks, 64 soldier’s wives and 63 children. Of these 32 officers and 695 men, 2/North Lancashire, from Dover are for Malta. There are a few details for Port Said, while 55 RE, 1st Division Telegraph Battalion, from Aldershot, 50, 1/Liverpool from Belfast, 75, 1/Leicester from Curragh, and 130 2/KRRC from Cork are for Natal. There are 93, 2/Rifle Brigade from Dublin, for Natal or Cape Town. At Gibralter 31 men of the Rifle Brigade will be embarked. The Jelunga will convey the 2/Rifle Brigade from Crete to Cape Town or Natal. Lt.- Col. Satterthwaite, 2/North Lancashire,  is in command, and Maj. H.O. Trevor, RAMC, in medical charge.
    Maj.-Gen Sir Archiba;d Hunter to Natal with the Indian contingent, to be Chief of Staff to Lt. Gen. Sir George White.
    Maj.-Gen French will command the cavalry in Natal and his aide-de-camp Lt. J.P. Milbanke, 10th Hussars will leave London for the Cape on Saturday (23 Sept.) as will Col. Downing, RA, to Natal.
    The 18th, 62nd, and 75th, field artillery batteries from Aldershot are under orders for Natal will embark at Birkenhead on 25th inst. in the steamers Zibenghla and Zayathla.
    The following officers have been selected for service with Col. Plumer at Bulawayo and they are to leave as soon as possible. They are: Lt. C.H. Rankin, 7th Hussars; Lt. S.G. French, Royal Irish Regt.; Lt. O.D. Blunt, Connaught Rangers; and Lt. A.J. Tyler, West Riding Regt.

Since Aug. 12 the following ammunition was landed here: 2,464 cases loaded cartridges, 300 cases empty cartridges, 523 cases bullets, 16 cases powder, 6 cases rifles, and some wads and caps.  The Umvoti, due the 25th, has 5 cases loaded cartridges, 125 cases empty cartridges, 450 cases bullets, 17 pkgs wads.  It is said that a cable from New York offers services of 10,000 American Irish volunteers for the Boers. (Interesting) Boer War Office denies it.

    Dateline Calcuta, 24 Sept.   The Transport India left here at 10 o’clock this morning with a further detachment of troops for SA.
    Dateline Alexandria, 24 Sept.   The transport Avoca, which left the Royal Alber Docks on the 13th Inst. with the 2/Royal West Kent Regt. on board, arrived here yesterday evening 14 hours before she was due. 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers, 830 strong will embark for SA and the Avoca will sail at 6 o’clock this evening for Natal.

p5c    A Reuter telegram from Gibralter says the Sumatra passed yesterday, bound for Malta
where she will embark 1/Border Regt. for the Cape.
    On Saturday (23 Sept) morning the 3rd Batt. of the Grenadier Guards, (abt. 850 strong) under Lt.-Col. Eyre Crabbe, left Pirbright Camp before 7 o’clock, took a train at Brookwood Station to the Royal Albert Docks to embark on the Nubia for Gibralter to relieve the Second Battalion. Also a body of the 2/Royal Fusiliers embarked to join their 3rd Battalion.

p3a.       Dateline Calcutta, 25 Sept.  The Sirdhana left to-day with troops for SA.
    Dateline Bombay, 25 Sept.  Two squadrons of the 9th Lancers have sailed for SA on the transports Wardha and Nowshera.
    Dateline Simla, 25 Sept. The last of the Indian transports, with troops for SA will leave for Durban tomorrow.

p4b.    Field Artillery units left Aldershot last night by 4 special trains carrying troops and horses.
The units were for shipment to the Cape. The first to depart was the 18th Field Battery, Maj Scott, commanding. Other officers were: Capt. F.B. Johnstone, Lts. H.E. Carey, A.M. Fox and 2nd Lt. E.W. Furse. The 75th Field Battery departed next, commanded by Maj. W.F.L. Lindsay. Other officers were: Capt. H.J.W. Farrell, Capt. A.R.G. Begbie, Lt. P.J. Patterson and 2nd Lt. Buchanan Dunlop. The last to go was the 62nd Field Battery, under Maj. Garnett. Other officers were: Capt. H.F. Askwith, Lts. L.M. Phillpotts, J.H.W. Johnstone and 2nd Lt. H.E.S. Wynne. The guns and baggage left by two special trains earlier in the day.
    The ammunition field column formed under Maj. E.S. May at Aldershot will leave for Natal next Saturday. Strength is 8 officers and 194 men and about 60 ammunition wagons.
    The steamers Zibenghla and Zayathla, chartered from the British India Company for the conveyance of troops to SA are at Birkenhead and fitted for service. Each vessel has accommodations for 250 men and nearly as many horses. The troops to embark to-day are the 18th, 62nd and 75th Batteries of Field Artillery and will number 500.

mules are prices at about $200 a head. Between 300 and 500 American teamsters will be engaged. Maj. Scobel, 2/Dragoons is in charge of purchases. At Chicago, draught horses are being purchased at $110 to $125 a head.
    Dateline Malta, 27 Sept.   The transport Sumatra has arrived here and landed the 1/Royal Sussex Regt. She will leave to-night for Cape Town taking the 1/Border Regt.

p8a       The 33rd and 36th Companies, ASC at Portsmouth were ordered to embark at
 Southampton on 07 Oct.  The 8th and 11th Companies, ASC at Woolwich to be ready to embark on 07 Oct. The 28th and 42nd Companies ASC, at Royal Barracks, Dublin, will leave North Wall for Southampton on 06 Oct. No. 6 Company, ASC, leaves Colchester for SA next week.
    The Union Steamship Compay’s steamer Gaika leaves Southampton on Saturday next and will convey the following to SA: Maj. E.S. May, RHA; Capt. & Brevet Maj. N.E. Young, DSO, RA; Capt. H. Christie, RA; Lt. W. Kincaid Smith, RHA; Lt. R.T. Hill, RA; Lt. K.G.G. Kirke, RA; Lt. W.L. Foster, RA; Lt. C.E. Balfour, KRRC; 2nd Lt. J.F.A. Kane, Devonshire Regt.; and an officer in veterinary charge of the horses. The Gaika is also conveying one warrent officer, 193 non-commissioned officers and men, 120 horses and 53 wagons, forming an ammunition column.
    Another force of 200 officers and 1200 non-commissioned officers and men will be dispatched to SA next week. For this the Government has requisitioned the whole passenger accommodation of the Castle Line steamer Braemar Castle. Scheduled departure is 06 Oct.

along with several other nursing sisters to be ready to embark for SA on Oct. 7and 16.
    The hired transports Zibenghla and Zayathla with the 18th, 67th, and 75th Batteries, RA left Mersey yesterday for SA.
    The hired transport Nubia, at Gibralter with 2/Grenadier Guards aboard has been ordered to delay departure from Gibralter for home.
    The hired Transport Jelunga has arrived at Malta with 2/North Lancashire Regt. She will embark the 1/Lancashire Fusiliers to Crete. She will there embark the Rifle Brigade for the Cape.

p6d    The Government have just chartered the Cunard steamer Carinthia as a transport for the Cape. The Carinthia is a twin screw steamer of 5598 tons register She left Liverpool on 20 Sept for Boston. She will conver mules to the Cape from either New Orleans or Galveston.
    
p6c    The hired transport Zayathla ( late Ruapehu, New Zealand Company) British India Company, left Birkenhead on Thursday and put into Queenstown with boilers leaking.
    The hired transport Zibenghla (late Tongariro, New Zealand Company) British India Company, which left Birkenhead on Tuesday for Durban lies at anchor at in the Mersey. Coal in the port bunker became heated.

p3d.    Dateline New York, 30 Sept.   A dispatch from New Orleans states that another steamer, the Montreal, has been chartered by the British Government.
    Dateline New York, 1 Oct. A dispatch from Kingston, Jamaica states that about 2000 mules, provisions, and 2/Leinster Regt. will go from there to the Cape, probably by the steamer Barbadian.

p3e, Dateline Madrid, 1 Oct.   British agents are still engaged in the north of Spain purchasing large numbers of mules to be sent to SA.

p8b       The hired transport Zibenghla, delayed by overheated coal bunkers, left Mersey for the
Cape on Saturday.
    Three Houston liners have been requisitioned to call at Naples for mules, and the Hyades was due to leave at once. Each vessel will take 3000 mules on board. Maj. R.L. Walter and Lt. J. Vaughan, 7th Hussars, and Veterinary-Maj. Day left Colchester for Naples on Saturday for the purpose of buying mules.
    The Admiralty have chartered the steamer Magda, Messrs. Trenchmann, shipowners of West Hartlepool, for the conveyance of coal and stores to Simons Town, SA. Messrs. Merryweather’s steamer Hambleton of West Hartlepool was also chartered.

p3b   Dateline New York, 2 Oct.   The British Government has placed a contract with the Louisville Packing Company for 4,5000,000 pounds of tinned meat for quick delivery. Similar orders have been placed in Chicago, Cincinnati and St. Louis. The meat is for British troops in SA.

p8a     The Press Association says: 149 officers, 68 warrent officers, and 1225 men , including
over 1000 men of the ASC and General Hospital Staff, will leave Southampton in the Braemar Castle on Friday for SA.
    The Zibenghla, which had been delayed nearly a week in the Mersey, (overheated coal) left at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. She will land her pilot at Queenstown or Waterford and go straight to Cape Town.
    Three of Messrs. Elder, Dempster, and Co.’s steamers have been engaged as transports, namely the Montezuma, the Prah, and the Mount Royal. The Montezuma is now at New Orleans and will leave in a couple of days with mules. The Prah is due at New Orleans and the Mount Royal has just reached Liverpool.
    The Cunard Company’s steamer Carinthia is now at Boston and will leave for New Orleans to load mules.
    The Union Company’s liners, Gascon, Ghoorka, German, Spartan and Trogan,  for transport service are in the hands of artificers at Southampton.
    The transport Dilwara is now ready to embark replacements for India. The transport Nubia is expected to arrive today with 2/Grenadier Guards from Gibralter.
    The new Allan liner Bavarian has been chartered to convery troops to the Cape. It is reported that the Admiralty is arranging for the City liner City of Cambridge and the Bibby liner Yorkshire. The charter is at the rate of 1 British Pound per ton gross register per month.
    Maj. Holden, RA, superintendent of the Royal Gun Factory, has completed the howitzers and Maxims which are required for the Natal and Zululand field force, and the ordnance will leave by the Braemar Castle on Friday morning. Orders for the embarcation of a large detachment of artificers, blacksmiths, shoesmiths, wheelwrights, collar-makers, farriers, carriagesmiths, mechanicians for telegrapic apparatus, hitchers, etc., have been received and the men will leave by the mail steamship Mexican from Southampton.

p10a    The Union Company’s Mail steamer Mexican will leave Southampton on Saturday next
and will convey the following to SA: Lt.-Col. J.F. Brocklehurst, Royal Horse Guards; Lt. Viscount Crichton, Royal Horse Guards, two officers, six non-commissioned officers and 61 men of the Army Ordnance Corps; Surgeon R. Richards, RN, and Surgeon M. Falkner, RN. The Mexican is due at Cape Town on Oct. 25 and at Durban, Natal on Nov. 2.
    The hired transports Gascon and Ghoorka are now awaiting orders to leave Southampton for SA and the hospital ships Spartan and Trojan will leave within a few days.
    The White Star steamer Nomadic has been chartered to convey troops to SA. Two regiments of cavalry are to be conveyed from Liverpool by the Leyland liner Armenian.
    The steamships Ocean and Ocampo have also been chartered as transports to the Cape.

p3b.     Dateline Durban, 03 Oct.    The transport Secundra arrived this afternoon with the 42nd Field Battery and army medical and vererinary detachments. Troops will disembark to-morrow.
    The Lalpoora’s troops landed this morning.
    Dateline Pietermaritzburg, 03 Oct.  The first transport from India, with the 21st Field Battery, has arrived, and the crisis of the military situation is now past, as transports will arrive daily.
