Bootlegs
In the 1960s/70s the vinyl live albums were around and then cassettes – easy to copy and trade. But now in the 2000’s CDR is the format – especially as copying is easier and cheap
99% of the bootleg albums now are just a CDR compilation made up – most without any artwork

Live performances from 1968, as well as four outtakes from their first album (dated 1966). The outtakes from Electric Music for the Mind and Body ("Section 43," "Grace," "Masked Marauder," and "Bass Strings") aren't much different from the versions on the album, although they're a shade less polished; "Section 43" is peculiar, sounding close to the official take, except it's missing the drum track entirely. Then it's on to pretty good-fidelity live performances of "Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine" and a crackling "Rock and Soul Music," from Stockholm in November 1968. The two numbers listed as being sourced from the Bitter End Cafe in New York in 1968 sound rather like live vocals done over pre-recorded backing tracks, as if it might have actually come from a television program. Closing the disc are five songs from a gig at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco on February 14, 1968, ; the sound is good, and there are a few highlights from the first two LPs, including "Masked Marauder," "Death Sound Blues," "Flying High," and "Thursday." While this is not an important adjunct to the Fish's early body of work, it does emanate from their prime period, and has better sound than many rock bootlegs from the era. It's also way more interesting and fun to hear than the live sixties Country Joe disc that did see official release, Live! Fillmore West 1969. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

Live Shows
Originally many of these shows were on cassette, some being on reel to reel tape. The quality was poor. But as the years progressed the equipment became more sophisticated with the use of DAT and Mini disc
The audio from DVDs can now be put to CDR
And with the different software’s available for the PC sound can be edited also
Some of these titles appear on ebay occasionally – most commonly is the CJ McDonald/CJ & The Fish Woodstock sets – with artwork – which is just copied from artwork that was made up for me – probably sent in a trade with someone
On The Live Archive web site
http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Country%20Joe%20McDonald%20Live someone has given a review of one of Country Joes shows saying not to download it as its crap – BUT that very same person is selling it on ebay

Barry’s Caviar - Barry's Caviar (jam) is in fact titled GASMAN.. its released on the ultra rare soundtrack LP Gas.s.s., a hilarious hippie movie where people above 30 are all killed by a gas...the LP contains songs by joy of cooking under the name of gourmet's delight, and the fish with out Joe ( but he contributes compositions) most of them feature the main actor from the movie as lead singer a certain Richard Corff ( which is not funny at all )... some of the tunes are instrumentals and one is the GASMAN.. which was often used as opening jam by the late fish.
The title Barry's Caviar JAM ... is used on the bootleg --another really rare disc which contains other artists as well.

The taper transferred his recordings to reels and 'recycled' the cassettes, thus, this is the
best source available. I did not doctor the sound, despite some obvious mistakes like the

Great audience recording. I always loved this show but don't think it is circulating. A
great show by a happy hippie, check also the Country Joe's website with lots of good old
stuff.

Recorded by Dan McDonald with a Sony ECM-22 microphone and a mono panasonic casette recorder (model # forgotten).
There are some cuts in the tape where various things happened, but most of the show is here. Transferred to Wav at 24-bit, 96 kHz, converted to 16-bit, 44.1 hKz using Diamond Cut Live/Five. Minor editing to smoothe out the rough spots. There are a couple of cuts in some of the songs, and it's pretty echoey, but I suppose it's not bad for an audience tape from inside a Jai-Alai Fronton in '74. I believe this was billed as "Country Joe with Special Guest Barry Melton."

Camp Winnarainbow – Adult Ca,p. Laytonville, CA 19 June 2003
"Somewhere under the rainbow . . . " Camp Winnarainbow is a slice of heaven in the woods of northern California. A circle of tepee’s, a rainbow bridge over the stage, and the nicest people on earth made for a very special evening. Half way through our three and a half hour set, Country Joe McDonald joined us for three songs, including the immortal Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag. The singing and dancing went well past midnight, closing with the whole audience arm in arm joining us on Times They Are A-Changin'

Chet Helm’s Birthday, Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, CA 1 August 2003
Chet is more than a legend in the San Francisco music scene. He is an icon. Playing on a bill that included Don’t Push The Clown, The Flying Other Brothers backed Country Joe McDonald for three songs before doing a short set of their own material. Pete did a tribute to the other birthday boy with a stunning Stella Blue. The Music Hall marched to Devil’s Kitchen and sang Happy Birthday to Chet.

Meria Heller Internet Radio Show 13 May 2004
Meria with Country Joe McDonald
Show opens with Country Joe and The Fish "Fixin to Die Rag" as Country Joe himself joins me for an interview and to debut his latest anti-war song "Cakewalk to Baghdad". Remember where you heard it first! Country Joe was banned from air-time and called unpatriotic in the sixties for his song "Fixin To Die Rag" which later became THE SONG of the anti-war movement during Vietnam. He never stopped working on behalf of veterans and truth. His band is touring the country www.CountryJoe.com and releasing new CD's with his latest "Cakewalk to Baghdad" song. He tells what Bush & Bin Laden have in common; the damaged troops, the lack of support for veterans and the improvements he sees thanks to the new media - ONLINE. In the News: Rumsfeld's in Bagdhad (his cakewalk); More smoke & mirrors - the Nick Berg "movie"; where's the blood? Why white hands? Why fat men? Smells of Mossad or black ops; Berg's father blames Rumsfeld directly and the Patriot Act for the death of his son (citizen of Israel, like Daniel Perle) so looks like more than meets the eye for sure; Az Zarqawi was KILLED in March, so how did he do the beheading?; U.S. offer $10 mil for the person who beheaded Berg (no relation to Phil Berg, Ellen Mariani's lawyer); Video at http://www.aztlan.net/fake_video.htm; Lt.Gen Odom says complete withdrawal necessary; Dumsfeld says the war may be lost (duh); Italians want their troops out of Iraq; Israeli's bomb refugee camp in Palestine; Bush attacks Cuba on top of 45 yr old sanctions (needs Cuba for American Union 1/05); Chinese realize through U.S. torture we haven't a leg to stand on; Arabs & Muslims asked to pull U.S. dollar deposits and use oil as a weapon against the U.S.; Bush says no justification for beheading (no justification for his war either); and more "stuff". Recommend your friends become a member of the Meria Heller Show - let freedom ring.

Joe kind of got squeezed in at some late point as opener for The Chieftains..
The story behind the tape is a funny one . i asked friends of mine who were there for calexico to tape this show for me. usually they get "backstage" and "all access" passes and were happy to do this for me. Joe was one of the earliest gigs to happen and unfortunately my friends did not get their passes until a later (post Joe show ) point. Not to disappoint me, they decided to tape the Open Air show from outside the Schlosshof ( the castles yard). They hung their micro in some tree and it turned out quite okay under these circumstances.
What nobody knew was that this balloon was coming down so that its passengers could have a birdseye view of the show.
And.... yes.... you guessed it ......at one point it had to go up again.. so what you hear is the ignition of the flamethrower of the balloon blasting before Breakfast for 2 and through out the first 1.30 mins..guess it also spoiled the fm recording of this part of the show
The broadcast features Joe 's political and social side..something the radio could could use as a red threat...but the quality is excellent...
