USS ANACOSTIA
Rappahannock River
18 July 2006
To Commanding Officer
North Atlantic Blockading Squadron
After Action Report
Sir,
It is my pleasure to inform you of the action conducted near Stanford Mansion on 15th and 16th Instant. While conducting operations in support of Federal forces in this area, Gunners Mate N. Marshall (acting corporal of this vessel) and Fireman C. Mann acquitted themselves handsomely ashore. They not only professionally completed their assigned duties for this vessel but availed themselves to assist Federal ground troops in the action at that place.
They, while under enemy fire were detailed to assist in the color guard, and not only diligently protected the national ensign, but the dignity of the Republic as well. Their actions in the engagement won them the respect and compliments of the Army staff, officers, and men. They were, Sir, a credit to themselves, this vessel, and the Department as a whole.
I am witness to these actions, having been ashore with the Army brigade involved as liaison and acting chaplain to the brigade.
Respectfully submitted,
R. V. Mitchell
Chaplain, NYW
