Smile Africa

In the News

Once upon a time, two men, known as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X changed the world with their revolution in search of racial equality and the total liberation of the black community in America and in the world as a whole. They both lost their lives in search of freedom and purification of the human race. Smile Africa is just a book that talks about racial equality and the need for every man to have an ambition and do something for his society. It talks about freedom, wisdom, and the truth about black inventions, not forgetting the need for everyone to eliminate fear in everything they do in life. As a young person, I read about Marcus Mosiah Garvey, George Padmore, Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, and J.F. Kennedy, to mention but a few, and what all these men had in common was their desire to see an end to injustice and racial intolerance in the world. Just like Marcus Garvey said, “I come from a society not better than many of you, but my mind lifted me out of my surroundings.” At my age, I’ve learned no better lesson than that which I am imparting to you this day, via Smile Africa, to make man what he ought to be—a success in life. Smile Africa is a book that talks for the less fortunate people who have been used and abused in one way or the other, and it is out to put a smile on the suffering masses of Africa and the world as a whole.

MARCUS GARVEY

17th August marks the birthday of Marcus Mosiah Garvey who formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association. He was the founder of the black star liner and actually had the intention of repartriating blacks in the diaspora back to Africa. He actually inspired people like Kwame Nkrumah and Martin Luther King who fought as the human rights activist. He married Amy Garvey and actually inspired blacks to lift themselves high, rise from the mires and hitches of life and asked them to get brains, get learning, go to school and learn.

Marcus Garvey actually delivered so many papers and worked with Booker T Washington and others to help maintain rule of law and equality in the Americas in the late 19th century and today, pan africanists look up to Marcus Garvey and amongst them, he was and is still a hero.

He always asked black people to admire the rich, respect their superiors and do the best they can to rise above their present condition. To Garvey humility and enthusiasm were the big keys to success and he also declared his believe in the power of positive thinking and to him, as man thinks, so is he. Let's all learn some lessons from Garvey and keep his dreams alive.

Sometimes among people of ultra mental slackness are people of the black race who see dreams and visions not in the sober practical way but as actuated by superstitions and this has left the race dumped in the gutter of Practical life as Marcus said and it is time blacks change their way of doing things and emancipate themselves from mental slavery.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JNR

Martin Luther King Jnr is the famous black leader who was born in America to a Baptist minister by name Luther King in the heart of segregation in America some 60 years ago. Martin grew up at a time when there was so much injustice in America. He saw blacks being lynched by the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist group that has operated till today. Blacks were not allowed to sit on the same bus or live in the midst of whites as they were viewed as inferior but is this really the case?

He was born into a Christian home and his parents told him about the fact that, all men are equal in the sight of the most high God and thus there was the need to treat all men with respect irrespective of their race. Martin, having seen the injustice around him, vowed to stay close to god as he was merciful and just. His father wanted him to follow his footsteps and become a Baptist Minister but Martin had long realised the need to fight for equality in America and thus decided to become a human rights activists and fight for the end to segregation.

He heard President Thomas Jefferson declare that "all men are created equal and are endowed with certain inalienable rights such as life, liberty and pursuit of happiness" and this motivated him a lot. He'd heard of the philosophy of non-violence by Mahatma Gandhi as well as how this helped him to defeat the British in India. He thus went ahead to form the NAACP whose main aim was to fight the KKK and instil racial equality in America. He preached in the church and on the streets about his intentions and soon had a huge following. He kept talking about the fact that : the arc of the moral universe is long but bends towards justice" and about the fact that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Even though a lot of Blacks were being killed and harassed, he continually preached the philosophy of non-violence and told them that "the best alternative to violence is non-violent resistance". He got married to Coretta Scott, a lady he met at one of his rallies and soon fell in love with her as they had similar goals in life. Martin had not long after his marriage heard about the arrest of Rosa Parks, a black lady who had refused to vacate her seat for a white on a bus. She was soon released after the intervention of this influential leader who called for a boycott of all state buses at the time.

Rosa Parks became one of the key figures in the fight for racial equality in America and the world as a whole. Luther King gave a famous speech entitled, I have a dream and this is in fact one the most influential and best speeches ever made. In this speech he talked about the fact that America can never be a great nation until all people are treated the same regardless of their colour or race.

He declared to the world that, he could see a day when his three children would be viewed and treated as humans in the land where they come from. Is this really the case in America today?

On several occasions, the LAPD have been seen harassing black people and a lot of other brutalities are being meted out to blacks today. Martins close ally Rev Jesse Jackson is still fighting for racial equality in America today. On the cold morning of April 4th 1968, this influential man was murdered whiles standing at a balcony together with Rev Jesse Jackson. The CIA and the KKK were blamed but the cause and the reason behind his murder is not yet known. May his soul rest in perfect peace until the resurrection day of the Lord.

THE TRIP TO MALAGA

Malaga is in the southern part of Spain and is dominated by several villas and beaches. It is one of the main tourist sites in Spain and most of the inhabitants are English, Americans, Dutch and mostly foreigners who are rich individuals. If only I am not exaggerating, I would say that every apartment or villa has a swimming pool, which can be used by all the inhabitants. The luxury of Spain can all be seen in this small town in Spain and one would love to stay here whilst he relaxes and appreciates life to the full. As a matter of fact, most houses or villas as they are known are all walled and thus one can expect total privacy and nothing else.

Hola and Buenos Dias are often expressions one can hear on the streets of Malaga and this reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger who often uses Spanish expressions in most of his movies and this is just the paradise of Europe. One can never talk about Malaga without talking about the green nature of the environment and the topography of the area is just outstanding and so beautiful. Waiting at the bus station is just something one would love to do all the time as it shows the unique and glorious beauty of the Spanish Island. Germany is neat and clean but Malaga is so beautiful with its unique houses and villas and in fact, the apartments or flats are as beautiful as houses or so called villas in England.

The people of Malaga are also so charming and the beautiful Spanish girls can be seen all over the place. A man can never help but admire the beauty of God's creation. There are several beaches in Malaga and they are all that a person would expect from a good place. One can never see any empty space as every space is developed. The commonest thing out here is probably water and swimming pools not forgetting the high rate of villas, which are just incredibly beautiful. Spain is associated with poverty but the developments here say otherwise and one can only wonder why people associate Spain with poverty and unemployment. A trip on the train from one province to the other is just a good experience and the neatness on their trains is just something I cherish and admire. The promptness is just incredible and maybe we would have to learn something from the Spanish punctuality and efficiency.

In England, the Spanish are seen doing the odd jobs and get low wages just because of their inability to speak English but least would one think about the beauty of their islands and country for that matter. This trip to Malaga has in fact changed my perception about the Spanish forever and I now see them as very skilful and very passionate about life and what good life should always bring to man. One should however not forget to demand / question the availability of a radiator in the apartment he/she hopes to stay as most apartments have no radiators because of the notion that, It always gets warm and never cold. I almost got pneumonia as I had to live in an apartment without one and this is in fact the worst nightmare I have experienced in my life. I had gone to Spain hoping that it was all nice and sunny but to my great disgust, it was completely the opposite.

Malaga is however a city without rules. I say this because, most of the drivers on the road have no valid driving licenses and drivers drive on even when the pedestrian light turns green and oh! What a dangerous experience this is. Drivers are able to wait on the pedestrian crossing and move whenever they feel like it and this can be catastrophic. I never saw a single Policeman throughout my Nine (9) day stay on this Spanish Island. I now see the reason why the terrorist group by name ETA operates freely and so easily. I wonder what happens in summer when most people throng to this Island since there seem to be no Policemen on the Island of Malaga. Nightlife out here is just as good as you would imagine and the atmosphere is just magnificent and fantastico; as the Spanish would say.

The scenery at Larios centro; which is one of the major shopping centres is just as beautiful as paradise and the green environment greets every tourist not forgetting the warmth of the Spanish people. Take a walk around this shopping centre and you will really get some good stuff worth buying. Shoes, Shirts, trousers, skirts, Spanish artefacts and what have you. These all signify the skilful nature of the Spanish people not forgetting their love for quality and no wonder they attract so many tourists each year.

It is so easy to assess every part of Malaga via train or bus and the main bus station is in the heart of the city where buses ply every route in Malaga including Costa del Sol where all the villas are seen. Buses go to all the major destinations at intervals of an hour. It takes at least 45 minutes for one to travel from one part of the Island to another and this is so exciting due to the nice scenery along the road. Where the Policeman in Malaga is, is however a question I have asked myself up till today. Reckless drivers are still plying the roads and the roads are still as dangerous as ever before. This is probably the only thing that will stop me from coming back to Malaga on holiday. The buses are so comfortable and neat and one would love to stay in it the whole day without getting off at all.

For some reason, the bus drivers are a bit different from the numerous drivers on the Island. This is quite surprising, as I have after all seen a good driver for the first time. The Police would have done the natives a lot of good if only they could make sure every driver drive like this man as he looks calm and very careful unlike most drivers on the streets of the Island. A glance at the island at night is just so beautiful and words cannot just explain the beauty. God's creation is damn magnificent and unique in every sense.
