There are those of us who have to write in order to remain sane and I can barely remember a time when I didn't write something. Some motivation for this might be found in "Memoirs in the form of two short stories" included in the collection 'Hell-Riders & Other Stories' (Times Editions) ISBN 9812044876.
Other (now comparatively rare) editions: 'The Turban-Wallah: a tale of Little India' (OUP) ISBN 0192715054, 'Beneath the Blue Moon' (Times Editions) ISBN 9812043284 and 'Behind the Painted Veil' (Outposts).

Excluding the traditional pre-20th. Century English canon:
Poets
Louis MacNeice, W.H.Auden, Stephen Spender, Dylan Thomas, Thomas Hardy, Robert Frost, Gavin Bantock - inevitably, D.H.Lawrence and T.S.Eliot, though it's no longer the fashion to credit either of them. I could add a lot more!
Prose Writers
D.H.Lawrence, Christopher Isherwood, Edward Upward, Graham Greene, Aldous Huxley, Patrick White, Muriel Spark, Graham Swift, Gore Vidal...The list goes on, but George Orwell's '1984' seems particularly appropriate reading in Blair's Britain!
