>> Monday 27th March 2006 Mariah Carey's Record-Breaking Career
Mariah Carey is thirty-six years old, and, barring a debilitating illness, or another movie as bad as “Glitter,” her 2001 vanity project, she will likely break the world record for the most No. 1 songs before she turns forty. The Beatles had twenty, and Carey is currently tied with Elvis Presley for second place, at seventeen.

She could almost break the record this year: her latest studio album—her tenth—“The Emancipation of Mimi,” has what music professionals call “legs.” It was the biggest-selling album of 2005—it has sold 5.5 million copies in the United States—and it has yielded two No. 1 songs: the gentle ballad “Don’t Forget About Us” and “We Belong Together,” an equally gentle but catchier number that held the No. 1 spot for fourteen weeks, longer than any other song so far this decade. There are two singles from “Mimi” on the radio right now, the hip-hop dance number “Say Somethin’ ” and the churchy vocal workout “Fly Like a Bird.” If these songs don’t take Carey to nineteen, she could still go on vacation for the next six months and finish the year with her résumé intact. She was the biggest-selling female artist of the nineties and is the first woman to have three studio albums sell more than eight million copies each in this country. She has written or co-written sixteen of her seventeen No. 1 hits, more than any other female composer, and has produced twelve No. 1 songs, more than any other woman.

Not all Carey’s achievements are commercial, though: she co-wrote one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon, the charming “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (from “Merry Christmas,” of 1994, which also happens to be the best-selling Christmas album of all time, but never mind that). And when she sang her perky dance hit “Emotions” at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards, she reportedly sounded a G-sharp three and a half octaves above middle C, one of the highest notes produced by a human voice in the history of recorded music. (Party poopers say that the note was actually an F-sharp.)

Carey’s freakish vocal ability explains part of her appeal. In the same way that people went to a San Francisco Giants game in order to see Barry Bonds hit a home run, people buy Carey’s records in order to hear her do things with her voice that no one else can do. Her first No. 1 song, “Vision of Love” (1990), made it clear that her instrument was the story—and it has remained so, through a celebrity marriage (to Tommy Mottola, then the chief of Sony Music), rumored breakdowns, and the public’s obligatory obsession with her weight. Carey can sing lower notes, like an alto, and extremely high notes, like a coloratura soprano, which says something about her range but little about her style. The brutish purity of her voice places her in pop’s theatrical lineage, in the company of singers like Barbra Streisand, but Carey’s aesthetic is not Broadway, or even particularly white. She is essentially an R. & B. singer, steeped in gospel, soul, and, especially, hip-hop, and she is a master practitioner of melisma, a vocal technique that dates back to Gregorian chant and is common in African-American church singing.

Melisma describes the act of taking one syllable of a lyric and stretching it over several notes—or, in Carey’s case, sometimes ten or twenty. “Vision of Love” is the Magna Carta of melisma. Whitney Houston popularized it, but Carey made melisma a required move for both R. & B. singers and contestants on “American Idol.” (Five years ago, before a concert in Peoria, Illinois, Beyoncé Knowles told me that she started doing vocal “runs” after hearing “Vision of Love.”) The song is a florid composition that expresses the philosophy that Carey has disseminated profitably for sixteen years: love will triumph and everything will be all right. (As she puts it in the song: “I had a vision of love, and it was all that you turned out to be.”) It begins with several bars of lovely, wordless melisma, as if Carey were warming up, and it ends with two very loud passages of melisma, one of them an a-cappella expansion on the word “all” that can be roughly transcribed as: “ah-ha-uh-uh-oh-oo-oh-ooah-ha-uh-uh-oh-oo-oh-oo-ah-oh.”

Calisthenics are only one aspect of “Vision of Love,” however. The chord changes, which are played on electric piano, are reminiscent of early Billy Joel—obvious, consonant, and rich. Carey’s sound changes with nearly every line, mutating from a steely tone to a vibrating growl and then to a humid, breathy coo. The melisma is what people remember about the song, like a ninth-inning grand slam, but that’s not what made it a hit. Carey, who co-wrote it, knew that the singing should bob and weave while the verses move toward a climax—the words are secondary.

Carey couldn’t have succeeded simply by persuading people that she was a craftsman. Her big ballads—“Vision of Love,” along with No. 1 bromides like “Thank God I Found You” and “My All”—appeal to people who otherwise don’t listen to pop. These are people who probably also like Andrea Bocelli and Céline Dion, singers who avoid the sexual tug of the blues and the glorious noises of rock and hip-hop in favor of tremulous expressions of chaste emotion. Yet Carey, more than any other musician, established R. & B. and hip-hop as the sound of pop. One of her frothiest and most delightful No. 1 hits was “Dreamlover” (1993), which features a loop of The Emotions’ 1971 soul tune “Blind Alley,” a song made famous by the rapper Big Daddy Kane, who sampled it in his 1988 track “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’. ” Beginning in 1995, rappers started performing guest verses on Carey’s songs. Suddenly, people who would cross the street to avoid listening to hip-hop were bringing rappers into their house, under the cover of Carey. It became standard for R. & B. stars, like Missy Elliott and Beyoncé, to combine melodies with rapped verses. And young white pop stars—including Britney Spears, ’N Sync, and Christina Aguilera—have spent much of the past ten years making pop music that is unmistakably R. & B.

Among Carey’s best and strangest collaborations with a rapper was a remix of her song “Fantasy,” in 1995. After it was already No. 1, she invited Ol’ Dirty Bastard, from the Wu-Tang Clan, to rhyme over the song, which is built around a sample of the chirping 1981 track “Genius of Love,” by the Tom Tom Club. (Carey has often described herself as an “eternal twelve-year-old,” an assertion borne out by her enthusiasm not just for rainbows, butterflies, and glitter—all of which appear on her album covers—but for the songs that were actually on the radio when she was a teen-ager.) Carey’s sunny world view is a perfect match for the Tom Tom Club’s twinkling keyboards; Ol’ Dirty Bastard, on the other hand, who died of a drug overdose in 2004, was the last person you would imagine hiring for such a sanguine track, and the dissonance is entertaining. “Me and Mariah go back like babies with pacifiers,” he begins his verse. At the end of the song, Carey coos about her “lucky boyfriend” while Ol’ Dirty growls “sweet baby” behind her; he sounds drunk, as though he might fall over. (Ol’ Dirty is apparently not the lucky boyfriend, but Mariah seems to like him anyway.)

“The Emancipation of Mimi” includes no songs as effortlessly cheery or as durable as “Dreamlover” and “Fantasy,” partly because Carey’s melodies now meander, in keeping with current trends in R. & B., and have lost the clarity that pop demands. “Mimi” is Carey’s most thoroughly R. & B. record; even the big ballads are in the “slow jam” vein and have little to do with Las Vegas, opera, or doo-wop. There are only a couple of Hallmark duds to skip over; you can enjoy Carey’s expansive vocalisms without begrudging her moments of brassy self-affirmation.

In some ways, Carey resembles U2, another veteran act currently having extraordinary success late in a long career. (“How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” the group’s most recent release, won the Grammy for best album of 2005 and has sold three million copies in the United States.) Both acts have left experimentation to their juniors and are sticking to what they do best. In the case of U2, this means using the heavy rhythms and glassy guitar sound that first gained the band notice, in the early eighties. In Carey’s case, this means singing R. & B. but without the scenery-inhaling ballads that helped her sell millions of copies. Her decision largely to omit those ballads from “Mimi” is commercially gutsy—if multimillionaires can be gutsy—and it makes sense. The album’s songs were produced by a host of people, including Jermaine Dupri, Kanye West, and the Neptunes, who have been guiding R. & B. and hip-hop during the past few years. Carey, having proved that she has the lungs of an opera singer, is now making the music that she has always listened to. Her idea of pairing a female songbird with the leading male m.c.s of hip-hop changed R. & B. and, eventually, all of pop. Although now anyone is free to use this idea, the success of “Mimi” suggests that it still belongs to Carey.

>> Monday 27th March 2006 Happy Birthday Mariah!!
Today is a very special day for Mariah and all her fans. Today, Mariah celebrates her 36th birthday. Last year, Mariah celebrated her birthday in London, at the Tantra club in London's West End, where she threw a party for the official launch of her latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi". She ordered a life-size £5000 cake modelled on herself. The staggering 6ft sponge was made by a 17 strong team of chefs from Harrods. The black, gold and cream creation was filled with praline buttercream. This year, Mariah will spent her anniversary at a theme park and then go on vacation. Although she insists, "I don't have anniversaries."

Mariah Carey’s remarkable vocal range helped her dance tunes reach the top of the pop charts in 1990s.

In 2001 Carey signed with EMI’s Virgin Records for a reported $100 million but her first Virgin album, Glitter, was a disappointment.

By the end of 2005 she was at the top of the charts again, and her album, The Emancipation of Mimi earned eight Grammy nominations.

Just call her cashin’ Carey

As Mariah Carey gets ready to release the fifth ("Say Somethin’") and sixth ("Fly Like a Bird") singles from her multiplatinum smash album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," next week, the actions of her former record company, EMI, seem even more foolish.

In 2001, EMI paid Carey a reported $80 million to release her next five albums, including a $21-million signing bonus before she released one song for the company. On Sept. 11, 2001, she released the soundtrack to her movie "Glitter," which flopped - in part, because the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., shifted the pop-culture landscape away from everything lightweight and, in part, because it was pretty awful.

In January 2002, EMI’s new chairman and CEO, Alain Levy, decided it would make more sense to pay Carey another $28 million to leave the company, instead of taking on the additional expense and risk of releasing another record from her. Rather than taking Carey aside and helping her create another massive hit (which was, you know, kind of their jobs), the EMI brain trust, like so many execs these days, decided that cutting costs was easier than expanding the business.

They embarrassed her by publicly asking her to leave. However, living well is the best revenge. Since leaving EMI, Carey picked up her 16th and 17th No. 1 singles, tying her with Elvis Presley for second place behind the Beatles in career No. 1’s. She has returned to Grammy-winning, multiplatinum form, making tons of cash for EMI rival Island Def Jam. Wonder who’s crying now?

4. By 1996, Babyface was already a hitmaking machine and this album simply confirmed his superstar status. Leadoff track and hit single Close My Eyes featured Mariah Carey on backup vocals and really ended up being something reassuringly tuneful and plainly enjoyable. A great one to listen to before kissing your loved one goodnight.

>> Monday 27th March 2006 "Greatest Hits" Already?
The latest trend among popular young recording artists has been to make a greatest hits album, despite how long the artist has actually been on the charts.

All the former young "teen queens" of the 1990s have recently jumped on the bandwagon and made greatest hits albums, such as Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Mandy Moore -- the list goes on and on.

All of these recording artists came out in 1998-1999, except Carey, who has been on the Billboard chart since the early `90s. So, how soon is too soon? Compared to popular bands of years ago, such as The Beatles, bands used to wait quite some time before coming out with a greatest hits album -- typically until the band had enough greatest hits to put on an album with such a title.

A greatest hits album typically consists of all the artist’s hit songs, and one or two new songs. Britney’s Spears’ October 2004 release of her "Greatest Hits" album included the release of her new song, "My Prerogative," along with other favorites from over the years.

Some fans are not easily persuaded by the idea of Spears’"Greatest Hits" album, and are not eager to go out and pick up a copy.

"I bought Mariah Carey’s and Destiny’s Child, but I would never buy Britney’s at this point," said Jessica Abramovici, a freshman at the University of Maryland. "I like her music, but not her at all."

Years ago releasing a greatest hits album stood as a milestone for artists, consisting of a collection of top-rated hits, or marking the end of a successful career. In recent years however, a large variety of "best of"albums have surfaced from performers with only a few years in the business, and only a few hits. Overall, the albums go over well with fans, and bring success to the artists releasing them.

>> Monday 27th March 2006 Stars and their skeletons
The New York Daily News recently published an article about celebrities and their "uncomfortable family secrets." Mariah is mentioned twice in the article. Below are the excerpts.

Celebrities may have fame and fortune, but that doesn't make their uncomfortable family secrets go away. When "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher revealed her childhood sexual abuse by an uncle in this month's Vanity Fair, she joined a parade of Hollywood celebs with skeletons rattling in their family closets.

Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Mariah Carey and Woody Harrelson all have kin who ran afoul of the law — from bank robbery and a "self-defense" killing to sex offenses and murder for hire.

Songbird Mariah Carey's older sister Alison Carey Scott, 44, who has battled drug addiction for years, was arrested twice last summer for prostitution in Suffolk County. She pleaded guilty and got probation.

And you thought your family was embarrassing. Now go give Uncle Seymour a hug.

>> Monday 27th March 2006 Australian singer Missy Higgins admired Mariah as a child
Missy Higgins, a singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia, is a big deal back home. She often plays stadiums in Sydney and recently scooped up prizes at the MTV Australia Music Video Awards and in Rolling Stone Australia's readers' poll. But here? Not so much. Nevertheless, in a recent interview conducted by the San Francisco Chronicle, Higgins spoke candidly about her childhood admiration for Mariah. Below is an excerpt from the interview.

San Francisco Chronicle: Have you played a lot of bad shows, like, did you have to play exclusively for kangaroos in the Outback or anything like that?

Missy Higgins: Yeah, not to kangaroos, but I've played some really dodgy places in Australia. Especially in the beginning, I played some really seedy pubs that smelled of beer and ashtrays. But then I'm kind of getting back to that over here in the U.S. Six months ago I did an in-store in front of four people. I didn't know where to look. I didn't want to look at them because that was a little bit too up close and personal.

SFC: Do you think they felt sorry for you or did you feel sorry for them?

MH: I think they felt a little awkward being the only ones in the audience. For me, if I really liked someone and I was the only one at the in-store that would be pretty cool.

SFC: Maybe if you saw Mariah Carey with four other people?

MH: Right. If you admired Mariah Carey.

SFC: I heard you did admire Mariah Carey.

MH: Did you read that? I'm sure I only said that once. I think I definitely did when I was really young because my older sister and brother influenced me a lot. My brother was into Kiss and Queen and all that kind of thing. My sister was into Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. So, yeah, I was into them as much as you could be into something at that age. I wasn't really into music in general when I was young.

SFC: It's OK. You can admit you liked Mariah Carey.

MH: I just did.

SFC: No, really. Go ahead. I was mainly wondering where that came from, since you don't do that seven-octave thing with your voice.

MH: Maybe I would if I could.

SFC: Have you tried?

MH: Yeah, I have.

SFC: Did you break any windows?

MH: I don't think I could ever do that.

>> Friday 24th March 2006 UK Magazines Tidbits
There are several Mariah cuttings featured in UK gossip magazines this week.

Star Magazine includes Pout’s Bust Enchancing Cream (£25 for 50ml) in their 10 Best Beauty Products for Spring. It’s described as "a luxurious souffle which contains marine and plant extracts to tighten the skin. Mariah Carey used it to look her best at the Grammy Awards recently".

Woman’s Own have a featured called "Meet the Kids". To celebrate Mother’s Day they’ve included celebrity pets who are treated like children by their "mums and dads". There’s a big picture of Mariah and Jack and the caption says: "Jack lives the kind of life most kids can only dream of. Like his mum, Mariah Carey, this Jack Russell wears Gucci and loves to stroll down New York’s Fifth Avenue. And he’ll only travel first class. Once Mariah splashed out on a chauffeur-driven limo to take him all the way from New York to Los Angeles, where she was filming a video".

Sadly Closer have picked out Mariah as one of their worst dressed women of the week again:

"Oi Mariah, no! Having surrounded yourself with yes people, no one is ever going to tell you how bad you look-or what dress size you truly are. But I am! Gross shoes and horrible dress equal Santa’s slutty little helper.

You obviously feel like you should keep up with the latest skimpy trends, but maybe you should consider covering up and dressing for your age and shape. While you’re at, sack the stylist and get a mirror!"

Diva Mariah Carey is renowned for not being a light traveller. But we reckon the 34-year-old beauty was having bags of fun filming her latest single.

Wearing an itsy bitsy bikini, Mariah looked well at home swamped in Louis Vuitton luggage in her new video for the song Say Something.

Today’s Daily Star includes a clip of Snoop Dogg ogling Mariah in the Say Something video and journalist Joe Mott seems to be rather envious...

"Snoop Dogg gets paid to do this. As you were toiling at your daily grind, the long, canine-inspired rapper was pulling in the folding stuff by studying Mariah Carey’s details on a video shoot. It’s from the video for 35-year-old Mariah’s new tune Say Something and was shot at the Louis Vuitton store in Beverley Hills"

"Yeasterday I showed you pictures of Snoop, 33, doing much the same thing in the new Pussycat Dolls video. Which means he now qualifies as an ornithologist as well as being the skinniest rapper on the planet."

>> Friday 24th March 2006 America's Next Top Model?
That Mariah Carey - always looking for a new industry to conquer. With her "Emancipation Of Mimi" album still selling strongly, it’s safe to say that she’s got the music industry sewn up nicely. Undeterred by the blot on her CV that was Glitter, she’s set to star in a new film called Tennessee, so she’s obviously not given up on becoming a celluloid icon. You’d think that would be enough for some people, but the `Riah is now planning to add yet another string to her bow - as a high-fashion model.

According to contactmusic.com, Maz caught the eye of top fashion label Louis Vuitton when she filmed the video for `Say Somethin’ in their Paris store. Rumour has it they’re interested in working with her as a model - and they’re not the only ones.

A Mariah spokey said: "Until now it’s not been something she wanted to do, but it seems the time is right. She’s got quite a few fashion labels after her and we are in talks."

Let’s hope she makes a better model than Caprice made a popstar...

>> Friday 24th March 2006 Pharrell Brings Snoop & Mariah Together
Snoop Dogg has revealed his guest spot on Mariah Carey’s new single Say Something was brought about by Pharrell Williams.

“We were working in the same studio. I was in the front end and she was in the back,” Snoop told MTV News “And Pharrell actually made it happen. He was like, ‘Come down the hallway and get on this mic right now.’"

And it was down to another superstar mate to give him direction. “Nelly was there too," he says. "He gave me direction on which way to take my rap.”

Despite her reputation as being notoriously hard to please, Mariah’s very happy with the results. “Snoop sings and raps and he was one of the first people to bring that style to the forefront. He took it to a new level. So that’s why its great to have him on the this track doing what he does so wonderfully,” she says.

Mariah let MTV behind the scenes for a Making The Video which you’ll be able to see in early April.

>> Friday 24th March 2006 Mariah on Kidd Kraddick in the Morning
Earlier today, Mariah was interviewed on the Kidd Kraddick Morning Show. "Say Somethin'" was played throughout the interview while Mariah, Kidd, and Kellie discussed various topics including the release of two singles at once, the GRAMMY Awards, the Louis Vuitton modeling rumors, and American Idol.

Mariah spoke about Pharrell's vocal performance on "Say Somethin'" and explained that he sung the lower parts during the verses, although it's difficult to hear him. So, during the show, Kidd decided to sing the low parts while Mariah sang her parts.

While on the subject of the GRAMMY Awards and how they've shafted her, Mariah mentioned that everyone said she seemed distraught during the 1996 show, but insisted that she really wasn't. She also expressed that she thought "One Sweet Day" deserved an award.

When the Louis Vuitton modeling rumors were brought up, it wasn't clear whether Mariah was just acting coy, or really didn't know anything about it.

Kellie declared that American Idol should do a Mariah Carey theme one night. Kidd added that contestants would have so many songs to choose from. Kidd had Randy Jackson's phone number and decided to give him a call during the show. He and Mariah left a message for Randy that he needs to get her a theme night.

Mariah's figure was also discussed and she talked about doing water aerobics with her trainer from St. Bart's. MC also mentioned that she did a diet consisting of soup, spinach, and swordfish. She said she got so sick of swordfish that she was like, "Can we get some different fish in here?"

Mariah added that she's just a muscular girl, even when she's in great shape like this. She said that someone could hit some of these fragile stars in the leg and they'd fall over, but if you hit her in the leg, your arm would probably break. Then she said, "And I say that in the most humblest of ways."

After the interview, Kidd spoke about how anxious they were before, but said that she was so pleasant. Kellie mentioned that Mariah's reputation for being late preceded her, but said that once you talk to her, she makes it well worth your time.

In related news, it is believed that Mariah will be interviewed for the Valentine in the Morning show on Tuesday, March 28.

According to MTV.com, Mariah and Pharrell play a superstar couple who -- when they’re not being chased by the paparazzi -- are enjoying romantic encounters around Paris.

"Say Somethin’" is due to arrive at Top 40 radio stations the first week of April, but there’s another single from "The Emancipation of Mimi" hitting the airwaves at the same time. Mariah will also release "Fly Like a Bird" to Urban radio that week.

She's the biggest-selling female artist of all time, but Mariah Carey isn't content with shifting millions of CDs.

The curvy beauty, 35, who is hotly tipped to play the lead in gritty new movie Tennessee, is soon to hit our small screens in her first-ever TV ad - for Intel Centrino Duo, a whizzy new computer chip thingie...

We're told: "Mariah's asked to do commercials every day but when she heard that Lucy Liu, Seal and John Cleese had all done the Intel adverts, she agreed."

Pop diva Mariah Carey is considering expanding her talents to modelling, after her newly-svelte figure sparked a string of high-fashion offers. The "We Belong Together" hitmaker - who has dropped 20 pounds (nine kilograms) over the past few months - caught the attention of prestigious design label Louis Vuitton when she filmed the promo for new single "Say Somethin'" in the chain's Paris store. Carey's spokeswoman says, "Until now it's not been something she wanted to do, but it seems the time is right. She's got quite a few fashion labels after her and we are in talks."

In a recent e-mail interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, soul diva Toni Braxton commented on a wide range of topics, from her health to producers messing with her work. Below is an excerpt from the interview in which Braxton was asked about Mariah's "comeback."

STLtoday: "What do you think about the year Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston had - Mariah's comeback and Houston's exposure on 'Being Bobby Brown'?"

Toni Braxton: "I am so proud of Mariah. And I have to say that 'Being Bobby Brown' was a complete guilty pleasure. My husband and I think it's great. I don't always agree with the seeming 'manipulation' of video footage, not that I'm accusing anyone of it, but I felt that sometimes a certain aspect or two might have been slanted a particular way that might not have been fair. How is that for politically correct speech?"

    >> Wednesday 22nd March 2006 Mariah, Pharrell Hit Paris For Romantic Getaway In New Clip
Mariah Carey's got a new man on her arm — and leg — in her latest music video, which she shot last week in Paris. For "Say Somethin'," Pharrell Williams plays Carey's oh-so-patient boyfriend who takes the singer sightseeing and shopping for a romantic day on the town.

"You know what was so great about being in Paris? Usually I'm inside a hotel room and I don't get to see anything. This time, I finally got to drive around the city, walk around the city and hang out," Carey said. "I love Paris; I love the electricity this city has. And it gave me a new perspective on this song, which is one of the first songs I recorded for [The Emancipation of Mimi]. It's got a hot vibe to it, when you're driving around in the car on a normal, rainy day in Paris, driving around in circles in a Maserati — who doesn't do that every day?"

Well, just about everyone else — but then again, Carey's not playing just anyone in her new clip. Carey and Williams are a superstar couple, trying to find romantic interludes when they're not being chased by the paparazzi in his Maserati — at least, that's what the video's treatment called for. But on the first day of the shoot, director Paul Hunter had to contend not just with his fake paparazzi, hired for the scene, but real ones as well, who chased after the pair on scooters.

"That's just a regular day in the life for Mariah, probably," Williams said. "I'm a low-key guy, so there's no paparazzi under the studio console, or in my apartment, or jumping out of my pool. I'm just not into it. So it's weird when you have these people running up, especially in Paris — they're on Vespas, doing wheelies, and it's wild."

The chase being real, it made it that much easier for Carey and Williams to get into character as a couple looking to get away from it all. For one of their escapes, the two frolic on the Le Pont de Paris bridge overlooking the river Seine.

The next destination point required clearing out Louis Vuitton's flagship store on the Champs-Elysées, so they could have some private shopping with Carey modeling her favorite outfits while Williams watches and waits. She also tries on a massive amount of shoes, while Williams plays piano on her legs to entertain himself.

"Obviously, being able to take your pick of anything in the store and have the whole store shut down for you is every girl's dream," Carey said. "You know, just a pretty standard day in the life of anybody. No, just joking. There was a time in my life I only had one pair of shoes, so that's my justification for having that little perk on the job."

Because Vogue fashion guru Andre Leon Talley popped by the store during those scenes, he ended up making a cameo as a shop assistant. "We love him," Carey said. "He saw me walking around in a bodysuit and he was like, 'Darling, you have to wear that!' So he convinced me that's the outfit I should wear [later on], so if anybody's got a problem with it, call him up."

After the shopping spree, Williams takes Carey home to his "bachelor pad" (really her hotel suite), where they kick back with a few Dalmatian puppies. "I thought the puppies would add cuteness to it," she said. "But Paul was like, 'Make it more hot, make it more hot!' And someone else was going, 'Sit on his lap,' and I'm like, 'Ask me nicely! Produce a diamond ring or something, for me to sit on a lap!' No, it was fun. I don't have a problem sitting on anybody's lap. I just wanted a better invitation, for the sentiment of the song."

If Carey needed a better invitation, so did Snoop, who's featured on the song but not in the Paris scenes. His part in the clip was shot separately on Sunday in Los Angeles.

"If you guys think I'm a diva and I have requirements, Snoop is the next level," Carey said. "He's the hip-hop king! So his requirements to get to Paris are, like, beyond platinum editions; they're, like, beyond ultra-platinum editions; they're like diamond editions. So we love Snoop and we wish he had been here, but I think shooting him in L.A. will be good because we'll have more time, more control. He probably would have gotten really mobbed in the streets here anyway."

While "Say Somethin' " will be Carey's next single for top 40 radio, she's sending out "Fly Like a Bird" to urban radio at the same time, with both hitting the dial the first week of April. A video for the song will be shot in New York later this month.

More Magazine claim to have discovered "how Mariah Carey keeps her chest looking so perky when she never seems to wear a bra. Now we know it`s all thanks to the Pout Bustier, £25 she uses- a boob job in a pot".

Kerry Katona comments in the current issue of OK magazine abut recent claims that Mariah is worried about losing her curves:

I`ve heard that Mariah thinks she is losing her curves after she has been working out- and her bum is disappearing. She`s not happy about it. My bum`s still a bit big and I certainly wouldn`t mind if it disappeared! But it`s always nice to have your curves so I sort of know what she means.

Meanwhile respond to Mariah`s claim that "the other day someome told me I was losing my ass" by warning "Just make sure you don`t go losing your marbles, Mariah"

Heat Magazine reports on stories that Mariah and Pharrell are loved up by claiming "If these rumours are true, these two certainly have been making beautiful music".

Aries Mariah Carey, who turns 36 next week, claimed one night that she couldn`t enter her London hotel because the requested red carpet lined with lighted candles hadn`t been laid out to soften her path.

This may sound ridiculous to some, but she was only behaving the way most Aries would secretly love to act. Given the chance, Aries is the sign of the diva and Mariah`s an Aries through and through.

But beneath those outrageous demands lies a sensitive soul. The Moon and Neptune in her chart suggest that she`s highly emotional. And she has to be careful- a few years ago she reportedly suffered a breakdown.

Personal relationships are difficult and a whiole clutch of fierce planets in her chart indicate that she`s never going to be easy to live with. She feels happiest in the company ofher dog Jack.

But those same planets imbue her with immense talent and 2006 looks like being a memorable year in her career.

She was snapped getting set to slip into a little black dress and join hunky Pharrell Williams for the vid of her single Say Something, out on June 5. The 35-year-old took over the five-floor Louis Vuitton store in Paris for the shoot, but diet-mad Mariah had a clothing crisis.

An insider tells us: "Marc Jacobs brought clothes in a US size 6 but they were all too big, so stylists had to find garments in a size 4."

With 17 US No. 1s to live up to, let's hope her record sales don't shrink too...

    >> Monday 20th March 2006 Mariah's New Skinny Bod!
Curvaceous Carey has toned up and slimmed down. How did she do it?

Even better than three new Grammys? A sleek new physique! Sources say Mariah Carey, 36, who flaunted her fab, firm figure in Paris during a March 9 video shoot, has dropped a whopping 20 pounds in recent months. "She was so thrilled to be fitting into Louis Vuitton size 4s," her manager, Benny Medina, tells Us of her Parisian attire. How did she shake off those pounds? Us investigates.

It's like that y'all "I have never seen someone approach diet and exercise in such a disciplined way, especially someone who has such a busy schedule," Medina says. While Carey's work pace and constant traveling made getting fit tricky in the past, the singer is making time for daily water workouts - she loves swimming and water aerobics! - with a trainer.

Diva dish Also getting a makeover? Her eating habits. Sources say the singer is now hooked on a healthy, low-carb, low-sugar diet (lean meats, salads, veggies and fruit) and eats several small meals a day. So far Carey seems pleased with the results. "I'll never be a stick woman," she has said of her shape-up. "But now I'm fierce!"

    >> Monday 20th March 2006 All That Glitters
How's this for an understatement? "My next film is gonna star Mariah Carey, so that should be really interesting."

I initially interpret Aaron Woodley's words as a Colbert-ian jape but, no, he's quite serious. Reports published in the industry trades last week confirm it. Produced by Lee Daniels (Monster's Ball, The Woodsman), the film is called Tennessee and is slated to start shooting in the spring.

"It's a straight-ahead drama about two brothers on a road trip," Woodley continues. "The younger brother has leukemia and they're searching for their estranged father to help save his life through a bone-marrow transplant. They haven't talked to him in 10 years and he was an abusive alcoholic. Along the way, they meet Mariah Carey's character, who's working in a diner and has dreams of being a country singer."

Woodley admits that this is about as far away from Rhinoceros Eyes as he could get. But he's determined not to be pigeonholed "as the director who does these weird quirky movies." (Perhaps he's recalling the time his uncle nearly directed Basic Instinct 2.) As for Carey's contribution, Woodley believes it will banish any unpleasant memories of her first movie venture. "Glitter," he says, letting the title hang in the air for a moment. "Whatever -- that's the past. People will see what she's really capable of."

She really liked Rhinoceros Eyes, too. She told him so while she was giving him a tour of her closets. No, he's still not making this up.

    >> Friday 17th March 2006 Cover & Interview: Spanish Real Estate Magazine "Aifoscosta"
Mariah is cover of the Spanish Real Estate Magazine Costa del Sol "Aifoscosta".
In this exclusive interview for Aifos Mariah Carey talks from the professional and personal sides of her life.

Recently I believe you had a small problem with the clothes in the American Music Awards. What happened?
(Laughing) It was something stressful. I went on stage with a gorgeous dress that was not finished yet, and on top of it, it was an important night and I was starting the show. Could you really see the rip on it?

    Yes, of course we noticed.
I spent the rest of the night stitching it before going on stage, although finally we decided to take the zipper out, since it was a custom made dress. You know the kind of tight dress that an emergency repair would have made a mess when I was out there. So we decided to stitch it on. Its something I've done a million times, but this time it didn't work.

Where do you like to travel?
I love the Mediterranean coast and Japan as a country, (pointing to her dog). This is Jack.

You must feel really sure of yourself when you pick your glamorous dresses out.
Well, if I had had a little more time the dress problem wouldn't have happened. To me, that night was as big as the Grammy night, because its a big show. Dick Clark is a legend and to be the host that night is a big honour. Any way I did it, there I was opening the show, with a ripped dress. I remember I was looking at Will Smith and Jada Pinkett, who were sitting in front row, two lovely people who I adore and know well – I met Will when I was 17, but I never sang for him, and when he finally saw my music he asked me why I hadn't gone to see him before signing my contract. – I was telling the audience all about how you all are my friends and things like that. Although I couldn't stop thinking about how I almost didn't make it on stage that night. During the break I had to go to the dresser to get changed again – Pamela Dennis and me had no underwear on, so this was another “detail”. So if anything else had gone wrong that night it would have been a real scandal. They would have said I did it on purpose. People are like that. But I don’t mind them anymore, but I was completely naked under that dress and with all those people in the front row, with a big step to get on to the stage, so if I did win a prize I had thought to tell everyone what had happened. In the end nothing happened, but with all the stress I forgot something I never forget when I win a prize, to thank all my fans for all the wonderful support. I have a wonderful fan club.

You always manage to mention your fans, even with your busy life-style. How do you keep in touch with them? Well, it’s like visiting many different countries. I go to lots of places and see the same people year after year. I think they are the friends I grew up with and there are always new followers in line. Logically I cant know where they are, but as a reminder of their presence I always carry with me my book of fans, because I don't always have the time to read what they write. I’ve got a favourite from Canada that writes funny stuff. My fans are always listening to what is happening in my life and what I say to the media, and they come up with letters with lots of fun ideas in them. They are loyal, devoted... And maybe people will think I’m exaggerating, but I really do feel all these thankful words. They give me approval in what I do, It’s something that makes me feel good about what I do. It make me feel good because when I decided to make music I wanted to free myself from a very unhappy period of my life, like my youth. A time when I didn’t feel very graceful, I didn’t feel..

At the moment you seem to be having one of the best times of your life. Is this true?
It is. The only thing I’m always worried about as you can imagine, is my voice, because when I’m having a good time at a party with my friends, I’ve got to stop and tell myself “shut up!”. If I want my voice to sound right I have to stop and take care of myself, because when I’m tired it doesn't. That's why I constantly have to drink lots of water to hydrate myself. With all the travelling, parties, recordings, record shows, etc. Do you ever get time to sleep, or better said to rest? In the past I’ve always had sleeping problems, and I’ve always been an insomniac. I used to write and talk constantly about it, but now I live in a quiet place, and I’ve learnt to disconnect myself, but it hasn't been easy. It’s hard because I deal personally with a lot of details in my career, so there are some times when no matter how many people are behind my work, there are things that I have to do myself, because I am the only one who knows how I like them.

Why don't you tell us about the men in your life?
Because you only want to know one thing, and the answer is... Well, I’m one of those people who think that personal issues are to be kept for yourself.

Do you know that you are one of the few celebrities that apparently do not have a love in their life?
Well, people can believe whatever they want.

But your songs are about love.
    Yes.

How did you end up recording at Capri? It’s rather a unusual place for a North American artist to record an album.
Yes, it’s not normal, but as I said, I really like the Mediterranean and I had heard about the place when I recorded Pavarotti and Friends in ‘99 so I told Randy Jackson, who was working on some songs I wanted to use when I was in Italy. It was Randy who told me there was a incredible place in Capri. So I went over there and fell for its weather and clean air, that is good for my voice.

Do you like the Mediterranean style?
Isn't it the best? I love the Mediterranean. The people, the food, everything. The funny thing is that my brother lives in Italy, and is fluent in Italian He used to be a model, and did Kick Boxing, but now he’s on to other things. He’s like me. The first time he went to Italy he felt like he had always belonged there, we are not Italian so I don’t know where we get that feeling, but Capri is special for me. I love to walk every day surrounded by nature and without smog.

You seem to be very concerned about a healthy life.
I guess so. In some ways I’m very careful because I spend a lot of time away from home. Some times lots of people handle the microphones I sing with, so I always demand that they are sterilised. It also happens when you shake hands with lots of people. Some opera singers for example, never leave home without covering their faces because their voice is their most valuable instrument.

Some times you have commented that you lost lots of your youth because you spent too much time working.
    It’s true (Laugh).

When you see artists today they seem to be having fun all the time. Are you having fun now?
Well no, you cant say I’m having fun now because I’m working. But it’s fine because I just took a little vacation. I always wanted to make the music I like, and not to have to fight with people that tell me what kind of music to make just because “it works”. Sometimes they say, Why don’t you work with this rapper? Now everyone is tripping on rap. Some News! It makes me annoyed because for years I’ve been trying to integrate urban sounds in my past recordings. I’ve always worked with rappers and made remixes. I worked with ODB and he was a hardcore rapper and no one would expect to see me working with him. Rest in peace... I really liked working with him, he was a great guy.

    Could you stop working tomorrow?
Yes, but I’d still sing for fun. Its what I like doing.

But you don't have to sing to make a living.
No, but it’s part of my soul.

Did you ever sing in a small club?
No, but there’s a small jazz club in Los Angeles and some times I think I should go and sing there. I used to sing in jazz clubs, my mother would take me when I was little. I was thinking it would be fun, I remember it was always very late. I’ve been in LA for some time, but I’m thinking about going back to New York.

Do you like the night life?
After my marriage lots of my friends tried to scandalise me with stories about night escapes looking for sex. And I don’t mind, I think it funny. Be yourself, do whatever you want to do but my friends have always made fun of me, because they know I’m a prudent woman.

    Is that true?
Yes, definitely and the cause of that is in a traumatic childhood. Seeing things that have driven me not to have a baby just to have one. To grow without any troubles in that sense.

Do you feel you are getting older than most current artists by turning 21?
No, because I thought of it when I was 18 (laugh). I feel like the same person. I feel that now I’m in the world and every day I learn new things. I have learnt to polish my character. You can’t let pain turn into hate. Or I would have never found any peace. You can’t go to hell and back if you haven’t felt a bit of happiness.

Is there anything you feel you are missing in your life?
I would like to have a few days off (laugh). I love my job and its important to be mentally and physically prepared. Its like being a sportsman, if you break your knee you will be out of the game the entire season. It’ a good example because I have to sleep lots of hours, be careful with my voice and everything. These days I’m happy, and feel proud of having good friends.

    >> Friday 17th March 2006 Kanye West comments on GRAMMY "vote splitting"
Outspoken rapper Kanye West offered up some post-GRAMMY Awards comments for a recent article with the Sydney Morning Herald. Below is an excerpt from the article in which West speaks about the "vote splitting" between his and Mariah's albums for the coveted Album of the Year GRAMMY.
Kanye West is the most important person working in popular music right now. In his own humble opinion, at least. Before the Grammy awards last month, the multi-award-winning, critically acclaimed and hugely controversial American producer and rapper declared: "If I don't win album of the year, I'm really going to have a problem with that." In the event, although he was nominated for eight Grammies and won three (including best rap album for the second year in a row), the most coveted prize went to U2. West is absolutely convinced he lost on a technicality, with the black music vote split between his album and Mariah Carey's, on which he was one of the featured producers.
"I make categories where I'm up against myself!" he declares. "I definitely deserved album of the year. I'm not saying that I made the best album of all time, I'm just saying it was the best album this year."
He nonetheless declares himself philosophical about the result. "I've accomplished almost everything that someone can accomplish in music in less than two years, so it just gives me something else to do, to make a record that's so annihilating that there's no way that me and Mariah could get vote splitting."

Already boasting three consecutive #1 airplay hits, Mariah Carey's six-times platinum selling comeback album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," will spawn two more singles for radio --"Say Something" with Snoop Dogg, and the gospel inflected "Fly Like A Bird"-- on April 3. The music video for "Say Something" was shot in Paris and helmed by Paul Hunter. Pharrell Williams and Snoop appear in the clip, which showcases the newly designed Louis Vuitton store on the storied Champs-Elysées.
The accompanying video for "Fly like a Bird" --featuring Grammy-winning Pastor Hezekiah Walker and his Love Fellowship Choir -- is expected be shot in New York City in late March, according to a Carey rep. >> Thursday 16th March 2006 Mariah Preparing for Def Jam Re-negotiations?
Fox411.com’s Roger Freidman is reporting that Mariah Carey is looking out for her best financial interest in the wake of her successful album “The Emancipation of Mimi.
According to Friedman, the singer has hired record business attorney Allen Grubman to help her take care of business in the Island/Def Jam conference room when it’s time to update her pact with parent company, Universal Music Group.
Ironically, Grubman had worked for Carey during her years married to Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola, but she fired him in 1997 after her split with the record mogul. According to Friedman, Carey is still keeping around her longtime attorney Don Passman, who guided her through the “Glitter” mess and helped her negotiate the $50 million payoff from EMI Music.
Friedman writes: “Carey, I’m told, feels that she was underpaid by Island/Def Jam for her "Emancipation of Mimi" album. … Passman, sources say, while good, does not have the inside track Grubman has with Universal Music Group’s Doug Morris. Only Morris can OK what should be a record-setting money deal for Carey. And only Grubman can get Morris to agree to something like that.”

    >> Thursday 16th March 2006 Mimi Valdes of VIBE: The Examination of Mimi
The following is an excerpt from a recent interview with Mimi Valdes, Editor-In-Chief of VIBE magazine, conducted by AllHipHop.com. Valdes was asked about Mariah and why she hadn't appeared on the magazine's cover since her "comeback."

AllHipHop.com: Why hasn’t the other Mimi – Mariah Carey – appeared on VIBE’s cover since her resurgence?

Mimi Valdes: Mariah is a perfect example of somebody that is loved by this audience – myself included, love her, love her, love her. But, in the history of VIBE, she’s had three covers - the worst selling covers. They just have not sold. When this album came out, even though it’s clearly her most “VIBE” album, we were thinking, “Is she one of those artists that you love the music, but don’t necessarily want to read about her.” Not to say that we would never do her, but… her next album, just because there is more of a story with the comeback, we could try to figure out something that would be interesting for people to read about.

That is the biggest misconception about covers, they are not about people who are [selling the most], they are about who are people interested in reading about. If you feel like you’ve read everything there is to know about Mariah – you’re not going to pick up the magazine. You’ll pick up her album, you’ll watch her videos, but your not gonna pick up the magazine. Everybody thinks they can run a magazine. I’ll tell you what, Kanye West, last year – worst selling cover.

    >> Wednesday 15th March 2006 Mariah Pulls Out The Big Guns
Mariah Carey is not letting any grass grow under her feet, now that she’s a multiple Grammy winner with a monster-selling album.

Carey has added to her arsenal of protectors and defenders none other than New York record biz attorney Allen Grubman—the very same Grubman she fired in 1997 after splitting with her husband, former Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola.

The dope here is that Carey is still using her longtime legal eagle Don Passman, who guided her through the whole "Glitter" debacle and helped negotiate her $50 million payday from EMI Music.

But Carey, I’m told, feels that she was underpaid by Island/Def Jam for her "Emancipation of Mimi" album. The CD is not only the biggest of 2005, but the biggest of her long and illustrious career, selling millions of copies and yielding several hit singles. At a time when the record biz is dead, "Mimi" was the consistent chart seller week after week last year.

Passman, sources say, while good, does not have the inside track Grubman has with Universal Music Group’s Doug Morris. Only Morris can OK what should be a record-setting money deal for Carey. And only Grubman can get Morris to agree to something like that.

Irony is abound here, however: Grubman made his fortune and reputation on his close relationship with Mottola, who managed, recorded, and married Carey until she divorced him. When Carey cut ties to Mottola, she cut them to Grubman as well. Bringing Grubman back is a surprise, but it shows that Carey is not fooling around, and isn’t letting personal feelings mix with business.

As a smart guy in the music biz said to me yesterday, "Remember, it isn’t the money, stupid. It’s the money, stupid." Duh! And Mariah is maybe the one artist this year who actually deserves it.

    >> Tuesday 14th March 2006 Mariah Ditches...
SOHH it seems that the Grammy’s has pissed Mariah off enough for her to aim high for next year’s ceremony. Up for release at the same time is "Fly Like A Bird" as well as "Say Something" featuring Snoop and Pharrell.
Mariah filmed a video for "Say Something" with the two rappers recently in Paris. Mariah and Pharrell are great together but I would have preferred to have her release the video for "Get Your Number" featuring Jermaine Dupri. She opted for the Pharrell track, leaving "Get Your Number" for an international release.
It’s also just been announced that Mariah will be amongst the umpteen people featured on Bussa Bus’s Big Bang!
If you haven’t seen the video "Get Your Number" check it out. Finally Mariah mastered sexy and they won’t even release the damn video.

    >> Tuesday 14th March 2006 Mariah Attracts Crowds
The stylish denizens of Europe’s fashion capital would have been surprised this week to spot one of America’s hottest stars promoting her own personal take on glamour. After jetting into Paris a few days ago, Mariah Carey stopped traffic at the Champs Elysees by appearing to film her latest video Say Somethin’ in a thigh-skimming, bright pink mac.
Earlier in the day the pop diva was mobbed by fans as she left the city’s Four Seasons hotel - this time attired rather more demurely in a cream coat dress. Mariah smiled gamely as minders helped her through the enthusiastic throng of well-wishers.
Although the Grammy winner doesn’t lack confidence about her appeal, she has even more reason to be proud of her figure these days. "Everyone said I was fat so I did something about it," she recently told reporters at a post-Oscars bash. "I’ve been working out like mad."
And as if to prove her point the singer, who turns 36 in two weeks, asked members of the press pack to assess her physique for themselves. "You can even punch me in the stomach and feel how tight that is. But I’ve gotta slow it down because someone told me I was losing my ass - and I don’t want to lose that."

Carey’s "Mimi" also earned another honor. According to the RIAA, "The Emancipation of Mimi" tied with rapper 50 Cent’s "The Massacre" as the highest certified album of 2005, achieving a five-times Platinum certification.

    >> Tuesday 14th March 2006 Paris in the (Near) Spring
Mariah Carey shot her new music video near the Champs Elysees in early March. While the multi-Grammy winning songbird traveled to Paris for professional reasons, several smitten stars decided to make sweet music of their own in The City of Light, including newlyweds Pink and Carey Hart, Kate Hudson and hubby Chris Robinson and Hugh Grant and his lady love Jemima Khan, who were spotted strolling by the Seine.

    >> Tuesday 14th March 2006 Mariah To Be Featured on Busta's New Album
    Busta Rhymes
    The Big Bang
    Out: April 11th

Rhymes spent three years putting the pieces together for The Big Bang, his first new album since 2002. First, he inked a deal with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label and worked on twenty songs with Dre. Then he brought in other top producers like the Neptunes, Timbaland, Scott Storch and Just Blaze to work on tracks, and lined up guests including Stevie Wonder, the late Rick James, Missy Elliott, Mariah Carey and Eminem. He says he had 170 songs by the time he released the album's first single, "Touch It," in late 2005. Then tragedy struck. At a February 5th video shoot, Rhymes' bodyguard Israel Ramirez was shot and killed as Rhymes stood nearby. "Everything I'm doing from this day forward is dedicated to Israel," says Rhymes, who has pledged to support Ramirez's family but so far has refused to cooperate with a police investigation. A final lineup for the album has not been set, but Rhymes says a handful of tracks are for certain. The next single, "This How We Do It Over Here," was produced by Dr. Dre and features Elliott. "It's specifically constructed to smash every club in existence," Rhymes says. He's also proud of "Into the Storm," which features Wonder's vocals, and the Dre-produced "Your Time Has Come." "Dre put the track together using the sound of a shovel going into dirt, dirt being poured onto a coffin and a heartbeat as the drum sound," Rhymes says. "It's about karma coming back to haunt you." MARIAH CAREY LAUNCHES NEXT TWO HIT SINGLES FROM THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI, TO IMPACT APRIL 3rd
SAY SOMETHIN' FEATURING SNOOP DOGG, PRODUCED BY THE NEPTUNES, GOES TO TOP 40/RHYTHMIC RADIO – VIDEO SHOT ON LOCATION IN PARIS, STARRING MARIAH, PHARRELL AND SNOOP, DIRECTED BY PAUL HUNTER

GOSPEL-FLAVORED FLY LIKE A BIRD GOES TO URBAN RADIO

With three consecutive #1 airplay hits under its belt (“We Belong Together,” “Shake It Off” and “Don’t Forget About Us”), performer and songwriter Mariah Carey’s 6x-platinum Island Records album The Emancipation Of Mimi, the biggest-selling album of 2005, will spin off two new singles this week – Say Somethin’ featuring Snoop Dogg (to Top 40/ Rhythmic radio formats) and Fly Like A Bird (to Urban) – it was announced today by Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group. Both songs will impact on Monday, April 3rd.

The electrifying new video for Say Somethin’was shot on location in the high-fashion world of Paris last week with acclaimed director Paul Hunter, co-starring Pharrell Williams (of the Neptunes) and Snoop Dogg. The beautiful and cinematic performance piece follows Mariah, as an international movie star, around Paris in Pharrell’s Maserati with paparazzi following them everywhere. Dressed from head-to-toe in Louis Vuitton, they stroll down the Champs-Elysées, stop on the scenic bridge Le Pont de Paris overlooking the River Seine, and chill in Pharrell’s luxurious Parisian apartment. The day culminates in high style, as Pharrell makes every woman’s fantasy come true by closing the newly designed Louis Vuitton store on the Champs-Elysées, setting the stage for their own private shopping spree. Fireworks fly on the streets of the City Of Lights as Mariah once again collaborates with Hunter, who directed the video for her 17th #1 career hit single, “Don’t Forget About Us.”

Fly Like A Bird was produced by Mariah and by Flyte Tyme’s Big Jim Wright. The Gospel-drenched song stirred the emotions of Grammy viewers worldwide last month, when Mariah performed it onstage with a full brass section and Brooklyn’s 30-voice Love Fellowship Tabernacle Choir, under the direction of Grammy-winning Pastor Hezekiah Walker. The accompanying video will be shot in New York in late March.

    >> Monday 13th March 2006 Intel Goes Back to 'Entertainment in Your Lap' Campaign
Intel this week is introducing new TV spots, a refresher of its Centrino “Entertainment in your Laps” campaign. The ads support Intel’s new focus on Intel Centrino Duo technology with dual-core processing. In this series of ads, celebrities appear on a users’ lap in place of a laptop.
The three new TV spots star Mariah Carey, Elijah Woods and Jacques Villeneuve and will air on EPSN and E! Online ads will run on Yahoo and AOL. Jacques Villeneuve is also one of the drivers for BMW Sauber F1 Team, in which Intel is the 'Official Corporate Partner' for the team.
The Mariah Carey spot aired during the Grammy Awards presentation on CBS. Carey makes her TV commercial debut in the spots from McCann-Erickson NY. In the spot, a man is working on his laptop wearing headphones. Carey appears on his lap. “Making a playlist for your girl?” she purrs. “Yeah, my, uh, our favorite songs,” he meekly replies. “Like this one?” Carey launches into song. Voiceover says: “With the new Centrino Duo, your digital entertainment really comes to life.”
Intel started the “Entertainment in your Lap” in September 2005, featuring celebrities like Tony Hawk, John Cleese, Lucy Liu and Seal. TV, print and outdoor were part of the multimillion-dollar campaign.
"Our first 'Laps' campaign for the Intel Centrino was really successful; we have strong attention and recall and consumers got the message on how powerful mobile technology enables entertainment on the go,” said Sean Connolly, integrated marketing manager at Intel. “We are building on this success … and bringing in more celebrities that people are excited to see.”
Intel is trying to maintain market share against competition from other chipmakers like AMD.
