News About MADS
Death of Gill Cameron

2005 started sadly for Mere Drama Society with the sudden and untimely death of its stage-manager, Gill Cameron.

Gill had been with the Society for four years since moving here on her husband’s retirement. She endeared herself to everyone with her generosity of spirit and willingness to take on any backstage job. Her quiet, calm efficiency as stage and props manager inspired confidence in MADS actors on stage, who knew that everything would be in its right place at the right time.

Gill would put a lot of time and effort into tracking down just the right prop or costume and could also turn her hand to carpentry and other practical matters. That the MADS’ production of Charity Shop by Charles Mander won the cup for best set at the 2004 Merlin Theatre’s One Act Festival was a tribute to Gill’s dedication and hard work as a member of the MADS team.

She was truly a ‘good companion’, is sadly missed and the sympathy of all MADS members goes to Gill’s husband, Norman, and all her family.
New piano in use for 2005 Panto.

The Lecture Hall in Mere has acquired an electric piano kindly donated by the trustees of Mere Manor Brass in memory of the band which gave many concerts at the hall in its thirty years’ history before losing members and being disbanded. The piano is easily moved, always in tune and is proving very useful in the musical numbers of this year’s panto.

SUCCESS FOR MADS AT FROME FESTIVAL

MADS entered  the three plays of its Spring production Three x Three
in the Merlin Theatre’s One-Act Play Festival and came home with two cups and pleasing adjudications.

Angela Kincaid was judged winner of the Best Actress Award by adjudicator Peter A. Spencer for her part as Mam in Say Something Happened by Alan Bennett.  All the company are thrilled for Angela and proud that she is a member of MADS.  In the same play, Bryan Sheppard and Adrienne Howell were short-listed for Best Actor and Best Director respectively.

MADS second success was with their other adult entry Shop For Charity  by Charles Mander. This production won the Frome Drama Club Jubilee Cup for Most Effectively Staged Production.  The set really did look good and congratulations go to all those who worked so hard to transfer a charity shop to the stage of the Merlin and to set it up in under the ten minutes allowed.

The junior group making a first appearance at a festival and on a full size stage acquitted themselves very well.  Is It Time Yet, Dad?  by  Wayne Denfhy directed by Allan Glide received a good adjudication from the adjudicator who took the trouble to mention every young actor by name.

Nine amateur groups took part in the two day festival on the last weekend of March presenting eleven plays.

MADS members enjoyed the experience and found the adjudication helpful and constructive.
