Postscript of 2004 Literary Festival
The 2004 festival was a great success and a record £3500 was presented to the Mere & District Linkscheme (Reg.Charity No: 1062328) to fund its important work in ten parishes of this rural community.
Our thanks go to everyone who supported the festival and its short story competition.

Some comments on the 2004 festival –

That was a wonderful week and I just wanted it to go on record how much I enjoyed all the events I attended and what a remarkably varied and interesting selection and presentation of subjects you chose.

It was a very enjoyable trip for me and I must add that I really liked Mere. It is a part of the world that I did not know and I am very impressed by it.

Congratulations  on a successful week (and months of preparation) and the best wishes to go from strength to strength.

Just a line to say how much I enjoyed the Writer’s Workshop on Saturday. Della Galton was both entertaining and knowledgeable on her subject and I think we all gained much from the experience. I am certainly encouraged to participate in any future workshops you may hold.

(We) enjoyed ourselves so much. It was a really happy day.

Many thanks for sending me the Certificate of Merit for my short story……It has boosted my morale and I will try to place the story elsewhere…..

AND WHY NOT?   FURTHER SUCCESS FOR COMPETITION ENTRANTS

Congratulations to Michael Bolt. His 2002 entry The Magic of Little Children, which was short-listed in the Mere competition, has won first prize in the Red’n’Ritten national competition. As he says ‘ persistence pays’.
And novelist Katie Fforde gave the same advice – enter other competitions -to those on the 2004 short-list who were not among her prize winners.

AND the winner of the 2002 competition, Signs and Wonders by J.J.Overell, has been published by The Book Guild Ltd. In her adjudication, Senior judge, Pam Cockerill, said ‘The father in the story is a painter of signs but this writer is a painter with words…Told by the boy, this story is like poetry in places, with rhythmic repetitious phrases and exactly the right word in the right place.’
This is an enchanting story and now, in book form with beautiful illustrations by Robin Lawrie, will appeal to all ages.
The Festival Group was thrilled to hear this news of further success for a Mere winner. Congratulations!
