Portugal at last! – The Algarve
Almost as we crossed the bridge from Spain to Portugal, we seemed to notice a difference. The land had been gradually becoming greener, but we soon noticed an almost English landscape on the other side of the river. We drove for a very short time to the campsite we had selected in the Guidebook. Mistake! It was immense and absolutely packed out, with vans on the sides of the road and people so close to their neighbours that they could have shared a newspaper. It didn’t take us long to decide that this was not for us, so we drove on to the next in the book, Casa Rosa.
We’re so glad we did! We must now be on one of the nicest campsites in the Iberian Peninsula, with one of the nicest groups of people that could have been thrown together. The owners, Hanny and Roger, rushed out to meet (or vet?) us as we arrived and told us that there was just one space if we could manage to get the van up the slope. Well, ‘we’ didn’t, but David and Stuart did, with John behind the wheel following their instructions. There are only six pitches here (originally twelve, too tightly packed) and everyone has room to breathe and take in the lovely countryside, on the edge of a National Park. John can’t wait to tell Derek about some of the birds he’s seen and heard, particularly the Sardinian Warbler. Roger has lent him a book on birds of the Algarve, so that should keep him busy for a while.
Hanny and Roger have lived here with Fudge, their Portuguese Hunting Dog (who doesn’t like the Portuguese, so I suppose that’s a form of hunting) since leaving the radio / TV business in Luxembourg. The little Bistro, which they run for guests is lined with pictures of Hanny in her DJ days with various ‘celebs’, a bit like a ‘Melody Maker’ Who’s Who of the Eighties and Nineties. They have even offered to lend us bikes, which sums up the kind of people they are. We’ve decided to stay and enjoy this wonderful warm weather for a while, going to the local Fiesta this afternoon and Lisbon tomorrow, before hiring a car for a few days in order to explore.
