So there i was, 1980 and my Dad had taken me to Ipswich (who Andy was contracted to whilst on loan to M. K.) to see a British league meeting and i escaped to the pits and managed to sneak in and find Andy. I explained that i was from M.K. and asked if he needed any help in the pits at Groveway. As his usual mechanic, Keith was having some health problems at the time i proceeded to help Andy and his Dad at home meetings until Keith returned at which point i went off to assist Bert Harkins until his retirement at the end of the 1980 season.
However, Andy and i remained friends and out of the blue in 1982 Andy asked me if i was available to go on a northern tour to Edinburgh, Berwick and Newcastle. It was like a dream for me, at 17 i was working and being around my heroes. The team at the time was Keith White, Andy, Craig Featherby and Nigel Sparshott (both sadly no longer with us), Tony Featherstone, Steve Payne and Paul Clarke.
I'll never forget that weekend, especially playing pool with the guys (especially Keith and Craig who i have to say were very, very drunk !) at the Edinburgh hotel, the family of supporters at Berwick who let us stay the night as we had nowhere to stay, the meal and drinks we had at 'Filthy McNasty's drinking emporium' in Whitley Bay, Craig dissappearing at Newcastle only to return with ice creams for everyone, and the one bad point, Andy crashing heavily in Heat 8 and all of us spending the night in Newcastle Royal Infirmary.
I called in to see Andy's dad at his farm near Thetford a few years ago but i've not had any contact with him since.
If you ever read this mate, get in touch, i'd love to hear from you, and i hope you like what you see.
