Bob arrived on loan from Reading half-way through the 1978 season and transformed the team from bottom of the table no-hopers to a team that could actually get a result. He was soon made captain and in 1979 skippered the team to fifth in the national league. He retired towards the end of 1981 to continue with the development of his Elfield Park training track which later became home to the Knights when they were forced out of Groveway.
