Her Majesty's Coastguard (HMCG) co-ordinates Search & Rescue throughout the United Kingdom, through its network of 6 Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres (MRCCs) and 12 Maritime Rescue Sub Centres (MRSCs) and Sector Bases. The full-time staff in these centres are backed up on the "Ground" by over 3100 Coastguards, who respond to emergency calls.
The Oban Coastguard Team covers a huge area of coastline stretching from Castle Sween in the south to just beyond Appin in the north and east as far as Loch Awe. We also have numerous islands in our patch and inland lochs.
We have flank teams at Appin, Fort William, Tarbert, Inverary and at Crinan. As well as Search we are also a Cliff Rescue Team and all trained in first aid.
The Sector Manager is based at Stevenson st in Oban at the Coastguard Sector Base. The Sector Manager is the only full-time Coastguard in the Area. All members of the rescue team are volunteers.
