This is an update on my page 2, exactly two years since I had my Stroke
I have continued to improve and am now able to complete a gig. Problems:- Afterwards I am exhausted. I cannot play as well as before, due to a lack of strength in my fingers. Speed of playing and dexterity are also lacking. My arm aches continously while I am playing, causing mistakes.
I am fairly sure why I had a stroke. I was taking Vioxx for my arthritis and had an attack of Atrial Fibrullation (arrhythmia ) 6 months before the stroke occured. It happened again just before my stroke, although I still had not been diagnosed, and did not know what was actually happening.
I would be awakened about 2am with my heart 'Jumping out of my chest' By about 5am it had subsided. It happened about three more times before I found out what it was. The next time it happened, I telephoned the 'on call' doctor and he ordered an ambulance to take me to hospital as an emergency case. This was12 months after my stroke. AF was diagnosed.
Atrial fibrillation is a disorder found in about 2.2 million Americans. In it the heart's two small upper chambers (the atria) quiver instead of beating effectively. Blood isn't pumped completely out of them, so it may pool and clot. If a piece of a blood clot in the atria leaves the heart and becomes lodged in an artery in the brain, a stroke results. About 15 percent of strokes occur in people with atrial fibrillation. Merck withdrew Vioxx from the worldwide market at the end of September after a long-term study showed an increased risk of heart attack and stroke when taken for 18 months or more.
Since then I have had no more instances of AF.
