About the Lions Club
Newtownards Lions Club is one of over 40,000 Clubs throughout the world, with over 1,000,000 members. The Club was Chartered (founded) on 16 February 1966, and will celebrate its 40th Charter Anniversary in 2006. Its members are local men and women who want to help their fellow man (and woman) - locally, nationally and world wide. The Club serves not only Newtownards, but the rest of the Ards peninsula, together with Bangor, Comber and Donaghadee. Lions have a good time while helping people, and combine social activities with community service. _____________________________________________________________

What we do
• We produce (in co-operation with the Talking Newspaper Trust) a weekly recorded newspaper called Sound Around Ards for the visually impaired [see link below] • We sponsor eye camps in India, at which the unwanted spectacles we collect are invaluable. • The old hearing aids we collect are equally valuable. • We help the elderly and infirm through our Christmas Dinner. • We visit hospitals and homes, dispensing good cheer and other more tangible things. • We encourage the development of the young through Youth Award and Sponsored Spell-in competitions. • We promote health awareness through Diabetic Screening sessions, Medic Alert promotions, encourage regular eye tests to detect and prevent Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy, and we organise regular CPR training sessions. • We also assist families in distress by providing food hampers, and by offering labour for such projects as painting and decorating. • To help our funds, we have also produced, jointly with The Blair Mayne Association, a book of photographs of Newtownards in the 50s and 60s. Copies are still available, price £7.50 - contact Jonathan Coates. _____________________________________________________________
Where does the money come from?
From YOU the public, donating through flag days, bed push, donations from sponsors, competitions in the local schools and the community at large, social events such as dances, personality evenings and quizzes - and, of course, by buying the Photo book mentioned above.
The Club is run through our own subscriptions, other "Lions only" fund-raising activities, and the collection (for re-cycling) of used computer printer cartridges
REMEMBER - all funds collected from or raised through YOU, the public, are used for charity - nothing is deducted for administration. _____________________________________________________________ RECENT AND FORTHCOMING ACTIVITIES
