About the Society
The Numismatic Society of Ireland was founded on 3 March 1961 in Dublin. Later that year, on 6 September, the Northern Branch was founded in Belfast by Wilfred (Bill) Seaby, Keeper of Numismatics, Ulster Museum, and Professor Michael Dolley, Chair of Numismatics, the Queen's University of Belfast, both, alas, no longer with us. Gordon Rowe, another founder member, became the Society's first Secretary/Treasurer. He is no longer a member, but keeps in touch with the Society.
Alan Dunlop and John Rainey are the last surviving founder members, having joined the Society in 1961 as junior members. The current Treasurer, Neil McCormick, is only the third in the Society's existence, having assumed the office in the late 1960s. William (Billy) Dodds, who resigned as Secretary this year (2006) after many, many years of sterling service, was made the Society's first Honorary Member in recognition of his devotion. Finally, it would be remiss not to mention Dr Donal Bateson, now with the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow, who was a longstanding member.
The Northern Branch is a member of the British Association of Numismatic Societies. The interests of its members are many and varied - coins, banknotes, tokens (jetons), medals, cheques (ancient and modern, UK, Ireland and farther afield) - and we are never short of speakers for our meetings.

MEETINGS
The Society usually meets on the first Friday of each month.
In January it meets on the second Friday, and in April (to accommodate members who attend the BANS Congress and the York Postcard Fair) it meets on the a date which is dependent on the date of Easter. This year, the first meeting of 2006-07 will be on Friday 8 September, to accommodate those of our members who will attend the BANS weekend at Worcester.
It does NOT meet in July and August.
Most meetings take place at 19:30 for 20:00 at Shaws Bridge Sports Association (The joint venue of Cooke Rugby Club, and Instonians Rugby Club) marked S below.
Meetings NOT taking place there are marked D (or B, for BANS Meetings) below - contact the Society for details.
Visitors are most welcome - without charge - at all meetings.

SUBSCRIPTIONS
The Society's subscriptions for 2006-2007 are £12 (concession £6).
Northern Branch members living in a Euro country pay €15 (concession €7).
In addition, there is a £1/€1 levy collected from those present at each meeting.
