At last, an album by one of the best groups in the county. Whereas most trios of this kind tend to have a strong front man (or woman) plus a couple of competent backing musicians, Marilyn Bennett, Iris Bishop and Gary Holder are all individually brilliant solo performers – and this excellent new CD is testament to the fact.
For the uninitiated, Marilyn takes all the vocals and plays a mean harmonica, Iris is the maestro (or should that be maestress?) of both the concertina and accordion, whilst Gary is simply brilliant of the stand-up double bass and, between them, they provide a selection of material for which the word “eclectic” must surely have been invented.
Traditional classics like “The Blacksmith” and “Banks Of The Bann”, sit ever so comfortably alongside compositions by Bob Dylan, Thelonius Monk, Irving Berlin, Michael Marra, Chopin, Brownie McGhee, Phil Cunningham, Joe Williams, Nino Rota and others, not forgetting an original song by Marilyn Bennett.
As is always the case, they’re best seen ‘live’, but, as their appearances are often restricted by other individual commitments, this is a more than acceptable alternative.
