HAMP FAMILY TREE
HAMP FAMILY TREE

Some of the following information was supplied by Mr Hamp, whose Great Uncle, in the early 1900's, tried to trace as many Hamp's as he could.  He wrote down the family trees, as he saw them in 1924. Mr Hamp has since been tracing the family tree's of Hamp, and trying to connect them together. From what Mr Hamp has told me, some Hamp family members were less than honest about their age, liked to use their middle names instead of their given names, and were prone to give erroneous information on certificates and census forms.  Which as you can imagine has caused quite a problem. I will state where the information has come from as I go. In my own IGI research, I found a Hamp as early as 1550, Brechett Hamp, but the place of her birth is confused, the IGI shows her as being born on 1st November 1550 in Rye, Sussex, and in Hurworth on Tees, Durham.  Later in the 1500's there are three Hamp's born in Leics between 1578 and 1584,  seven in Stepney, London between 1579 and 1594, and one born in Warwick in 1594.  By the 1600's the Hamp's had spread out further to Buckinghamshire, Derbyshire, Somerset and Worcestershire.  In the 1700's there was an Elizabeth Hamp born in 1709, Woburn Bedfordshire, and a George Hamp born in Aldermaston Berkshire, more Hamp's in already named counties, plus, more in Durham, Gloucestershire, Hereford, Hertfordshire, Northants, Northumberland,  Oxfordshire, Shropshire, and one in Yorkshire.  By the 1800's, the counties, Chesire, Hampshire, Surrey had Hamp's being born there.  It would seem though that the surname Hamp originated in Germany, as my searches on the Latter Day Saints web site, show many more Hamps, than were in England up to the late 1800's  It is fast becoming a one name study.  What I have done is divide the proven Hamp information for my family from the unproven, on two pages, and if there is anyone out there, also researching the name and has some information for me, please get in touch.
