Leicester granite at the Naze

IT’S STARTED!

The Southern point hard rock protection at the tower Groyne costing ,000 has now started.

The project was launched on Monday 2nd November and involves 300 tons of Leicester granite being imported to Walton. This granite is being placed at the northern end of the existing concrete sea defence wall just below the Naze cafe creating a further defence against the sea cutting in behind the existing wall.

Existing Concrete sea defence

This new venture is being completed under the Council's maintenance budget and the good news is that the repair work will be reviewed at regular intervals and any necessary work carried out as required.

To help facilitate this the Council have agreed for surplus boulders to be supplied by the contractors so that future repairs will not create any unnecessary expense or disruption.

MORE GOOD NEWS

David Gager, the Society Chairman, when interviewed on-site by BBC Essex on the morning of the 2nd November took the opportunity to thank the Tendring District Council for getting things moving. At the time it was also announced that TDC, in collaboration with Harwich Haven Authority and the Environmental Agency, had obtained funding of ,000 to research soft cliff erosion at the Naze. The 3 year project, which is to be carried out by the Universities of Bristol and Liverpool, will involve tests both on-site and in the laboratory, the results of which will be available throughout Europe where similar soil erosion problems to those at the Naze exist.

The Society is to assist on the project by monitoring and reporting cliff movements and the findings of the research will determine the technical solution to be adopted in the creation of the centrehard point.

AND FINALLY

The government have now announced approval of the Harwich Harbour dredge which will enable much larger vessels to use the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe. A good deal of the suitable dredged material will be deposited on the North end of the Naze thereby creating a northern seadefence area.

WALTON ON THE WEB

With the able assistance of Nimrod who has created Walton-on-the-Naze pages on the Internet, your chairman has been successful in launching Naze Protection Society pages on the World Wide Web. These can be accessed through www.wonz.demon.co.uk

NOTES ON THE NAZE

After a considerable amount of work by our good friend Mike Todd we are pleased to announce that six fact sheets are now available. These cover the areas of History, Birds, Insects, Geology, Plants, and Seashore and are available at a nominal cost of or the set from the Naze shop or David Gager, Haven House, Old Hall Lane, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex CO14 8LF.

SAVE THE NAZE CHARITY SHOP

The magnificent team of volunteers who daily run this shop in Walton high street have managed to raise a considerable sum of money this year, not only by ensuring that the shop is staffed and looked after but also by grasping other opportunities that have come along.

The latest project will be running two table tops at the Christmas Bazaar in the Columbine Centre on Saturday 21st of November. If you are able to support these gallant people either with goods, help, or donation then Joy Otter would be very pleased to hear from you, she can be contacted through the shop.

A new supply of the popular good quality Society sweat shirts with the Naze logo in colour embroidered on are now available at the shop.

The Naze funds now stand at over 000.

SEASONS GREETINGS
