No. 10 June 2002

Erosion Continues apace

Erosion is relentless and last winter was no exception in destroying another third of an acre of this beautiful public open space. The pictures here show a gun emplacement (cylindrical concrete lump) on the cliff top as it appeared in Newsletter No 9 in July last year and where it is now in June 2002. Please continue to support the Society in raising awareness of the issue. Lobby Councillors and MP's and tell them that in 25 years of public ownership nothing has been done to protect this part of the coast. It was protected in Victorian times but since the Second World War the authorities failed to maintain the defences.

Council plan to do nothing to Save the Naze in the next 5 years.

Tendring District Council have put out for comment to interested parties Initial Proposals for the 'Tendring Coast Protection Strategy, 2002-2007'. The Society was very disappointed in this as far as the Naze is concerned for it amounted to a mandate for them to do nothing for five years after having already done nothing for the last 25 years.

The Society's reply for the request for comments included the following remarks and demands:

Gun emplacement in July 2001
Gun emplacement in July 2001

Gun emplacement in June 2002
Gun emplacement in June 2002 (Closest one)

The society were appalled at the omission from the plan of any reference to the three hard point scheme that was agreed and approved only after overcoming the difficulties of getting all parties to agree a scheme and a great deal of expenditure of public time and money.

That the currently approved three hard point scheme should be implemented immediately unless the results from the EPSRC research project (see other item in this newsletter) demonstrate conclusively that the scheme would have a detrimental effect on adjacent coastline. This will rule out the argument for not hitherto proceeding with this scheme.

The Naze Protection Society would welcome the opportunity to assist the Council in raising the necessary funding needed to implement the three hard point scheme.

The Society is prepared to donate the additional 3% to the 97% government Revenue Support Grant (RSG) for maintenance work and enable the southern hard point to be completed as originally envisaged at no cost to TDC.

That the Council should be more proactive, ensure the collaboration of interested parties and so ensure the future of the Naze.

Naze Poem

A locally recognised poet has written the following poem of the Naze:

A vista of blue, shimmering sea,
Kites fly, larks tremble on high.
The cliffs, red-gold
Sandwiched with blue clay
Are crowned with a summer hat
Of grass and flowers.

But surely the path is narrower
Than yesterday?
The relentless, rolling surge of the sea
Devours beneath, unseen.
Slowly the earth slides,
A gentle avalanche.

Like a child's half-eaten biscuit
Bite-sized chucks fall, crumbling,
Jam-topped with pink willow herb.
Above, the short dry grass
Moves in the breeze, not scenting danger.

The lark sings on, a chorister at this marriage Of land and sea.

Research Results imminent.

Research to create a model to predict erosion of soft cliffs such as the Naze is due and it is hoped that this will confirm that the approved three hard point scheme can be implemented as it would not have any detrimental effect on surrounding coastline. This was the reason the council used for not proceeding in the past.

Funds Swell to 000

Thanks to efforts of a few dedicated volunteers the Save the Naze shop that sells used clothes and bric-a -brac donated by the public continues to be a great success and provide a steady income to increase funds. In addition volunteers participate in car boot sales and Mike Todds mans the caravan most days and is a mine of information that he is only to eager to impart to willing listeners. These incomes plus that from the sale of the Society's literature and other items is currently generating an annual income of around 000.
