Coastal Protection at Walton-on-the-Naze - MAJOR CLIFF FALL
SAVE THE NAZE STOP PRESS
Further Major Slippage at the Naze
15th January 2001
Another huge piece of the Naze cliffs has slipped losing a further half-acre of public
amenity space and causing Tendring District Council to create a new path along the cliff
because of the danger to the public. The slippage was at the spot where the centre hard
point of the approved coastal defense scheme was to have been erected for which Tendring
District Council would not support a submission for lottery funds.
The reason given for Tendring District Council's lack of action in saving the Naze is
they wish to await the results of current research as they want to be certain that any
implemented scheme will not have a detrimental effect on other parts of the coastline.
The pre-World War Tamaris wall and Victorian breakwaters protected the Naze in the past
and there is no evidence they had a detrimental effect on the surrounding coastline. It
is unlikely that the further research will provide the absolute assurance Tendring
District Council require and therefore they will never do anything to save the Naze and
it is of grave concern to the public that this negative approach is unnecessarily losing
beautiful and irreplaceable public open space.
If you are concerned please write to the Chief Executive of Tendring District Council
at the Town Hall Clacton-on-Sea, Essex CO15 1SE, or your MP.
