A somewhat strange set,
this one. Made by General Electric of America, most likely in the late 1950s, this radio has an all metal case in the form of an aluminium
extrusion. To avoid screening the ferrite rod is fitted outside the casing under a decorative plastic cover. The case measures
170 x 88 x 35mm and the weight without batteries is about 550g. The set
actually works and to remove the PCB from the one-piece casing looks like a
major job, so I've left well alone. Reception is quite good, coverage is
medium wave only. The circuit is a superhet, and considering the all-metal
enclosure, sound quality is quite good. Power is from 2 off AA cells, and
the battery compartment is accessed by removing the left-hand case end.
There is also a phono socket, but whether this is for an earphone or for a tape
recorder I haven't found out.
