Newtonmore

The village of Newtonmore is situated in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park in the Scottish Highlands.  Many locations throughout the area have featured in the BBC TV Series "Monarch of the Glen" with the village having been home to its cast and crew each summer from 1999 until 2005.

Things to do and see

Opportunities for wildlife spotting in Badenoch and Strathspey are many and various with visits to the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Highland Wildlife Park (home to Red Deer, Highland Cattle, bison, foxes, wolves and otters) and the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd thoroughly recommended. Ideal bird watching opportunities are also available with the RSPB reserves close by at Insh Marshes National Nature Reserve and Abernethy (home of Osprey and the increasingly rare Capercaillie).  Why not try a "Wildlife and Birdwatch Safari"? or watch for Pine Martens whilst you are here? For walkers, Newtonmore's "Wildcat Trail", a series of marked paths, offers some outstanding opportunities; whether it be a gentle riverside stroll; a more energetic hill walk;or through woodland or over moorland. "Munro Baggers" will find some twenty or so peaks within easy driving distance. We have a range of maps available for guests' use when planning walks with more comprehensive information being available at the "Wildcat Centre" in the village's Main Street.

Golf can be played at the village course which is within easy walking distance or at any of the seven other courses which are within Badenoch and Strathspey. Winter visitors will find that the ski slopes of Cairngorm are easily accessible with those at Aonach Moor just over an hour away. Enthusiasts of fishing, pony trekking, mountain or quad biking and 4X4 off-road driving are catered for locally.

Those passing their time less energetically will find much to do. Newtonmore is home to the Clan MacPherson Museum, which displays historic clan relics including mementos relating to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745; the much acclaimed and multi award winning Highland Folk Park which shows insights into Highland life from early 18th century townships to mid 20th century working crofts and the water light and music theatre "Waltzing Waters". The Whisky distilleries of Speyside, the Cairngorm funicular railway, one of Britain's newest and, by contrast, the Strathspey Steam Railway are all worth a visit.

The picturesque Rothiemurchus Estate, described by the "Sunday Times" / Readers' Digest as one of the "100 Most Amazing Places in the UK" should also be on your local "To See" list.

For touring further afield, Newtonmore is ideally situated at the junction of routes to the North, South and West so that day trips to Inverness and the Moray Coast, Perthshire, Fort William, Ben Nevis, Loch Ness, Glenfinnan / the Road to the Isles and even Royal Deeside are all easily possible.  A break from driving can also be had by taking the train from Newtonmore with its services to Inverness and Perth which have good connections to the Kyle of Lochalsh and the Far North.
