Photograph of my greatgrandfather, Charles Day wearing his Albert Medal.      

He was christened on 10th January 1830.  He married Eliza Sanders in 1850 and they had 10 children, two of whom died in childhood.  Their three eldest sons, Joseph,William and Thomas died from injuries received in the explosion.  Their youngest child, Eliza, was my grandmother.  In 1897 she married Joseph Clay, whose father, also called Joseph, who was the underviewer, also died from injuries received in the explosion.

Mr William Stratford Dugdale, owner of Baddesley Pit.  He went underground to give encouragement to rescuers and was down when the explosion occurred.  He died from his injuries on 9th May 1882.  He left a wife, Alice Frances, daughter of Lord Trevelyan, and two young sons.

MEMORIAL WHEEL ON BADDESLEY COMMON

This memorial in the form of half a winding wheel is situated on the site of the old Maypole Mine opposite to the Maypole Inn.  The inscription reads "This wheel was erected by the Baddesley Ensor Parish Council in 1991.  In memory of all the miners who for 300 years worked and many of whom died in the mines at Baddesley Ensor.  The last mine closed in march 1989".

MEMORIAL WHEEL AT BAXTERLEY

The memorial wheel at Baxterley is situated by the village pond next to the Rose Inn and opposite to the site of the Baddesley/ Baxterley Pit.  The inscription reads "In memory of the Baxterley Pits and the people of this village who worked there 1850-1989". 

 

MEMORIAL PLAQUE IN BADDESLEY CHURCH

This memorial plaque inside Baddesley church is dedicated to the memory of Mr William Stratford Dugdale, owner of the mine, and seven men from the village of Baddesley Ensor who all died from injuries received in the Baddesley/Baxterley Pit Explosion.

MEMORIAL INSIDE BAXTERLEY CHURCH

This memorial in Baxterley church is dedicated to the memory of Mr William Stratford Dugdale, owner of the mine, and of the eleven men from the village of Baxterley who died following the Baddesley/Baxterley Pit explosion.

Stone plaque, opposite Merevale Church, erected to replace trees originally planted in 1884 in memory of Mr John Pogmore who was killed in the Baddesley Pit Disaster.  The inscription is inaccurate as Mr Pogmore was not one of those who received medals for bravery.  For full list of Albert Medal winners see Citations.
