Coalmining

research services

For schools, genealogists, students, businesses, picture and film

researchers and anyone interested in British coalmining history

Provided by Alan Davies, curator for 15 years of the recently closed Lancashire Mining Museum, Salford. Researching the coal industry for the last 30 years. Former coalminer, mining student, design student and freelance photographer, pilot, professional archivist at Wigan for 6 years and currently a photographic image cataloguer.

Through this site you will access my experience in handling coalmining enquiries of all types, from school children’s projects to PhD research.

You will also gain access to huge non-public collections of mining documents, images and photo collections, non NCB films (the BFI hold copyright on former NCB films), historical reference and statistical books, geological maps and plans. Exercise your body and brain through my talks and guided walks!

Whatever your enquiry I will be able to help in some way, if only to refer you to the relevant source of information. I haven’t been stumped yet!

Is there a charge? It depends!
For enquiries which I can answer after a few minutes searching I only ask for a donation, other services such as photograph and non NCB film copying or more extensive research please contact me by email to discuss your requirements.

Please note my web site has been in a technical limbo for quite a while along with three changes in servers which affects links and images so sorry if anything doesn’t work. My advice, don’t ever set up your own web site!
