Green and Pleasant
And as the spring unfolds it’s there-
Hanging on air -pungent, sickly,
Bitter scent assaulting nose and throat
With every breath. Out travelling
This road - high hedged with windows shut
Up tight - it permeates the car :
I know the crop before that flash
Of lurid yellow proclaims rape.
Florescent acid yellow flames
Steal from laburnum’s subtle spark -
And from the hills a patchwork glows -
An alien crop burns England’s heart.
Bluebells
(Two Haiku)
A secret blue sea
Fills the wood near Wesley Mill -
Surfed by young rabbits.
A single pink bell
Celebrates diversity,
Startles ranks of blue.
Cow parsley
(Haiku)
After April rain
Country verges billow white :
Soak the passer-by.
LUCKY
The day I won the lottery was cold,
No sun or birdsong, steady drizzle fell.
The morning that my numbers all lined up
I woke hung over, crapulent, unwell.
The Saturday my lucky line up worked
The dog escaped and my car let me down;
On the day that the balls rolled into place,
I was too late to catch the train to town.
Instead of soccer, shopped with surly wife -
I missed the match, our first loss in thirteen;
But as I saw my numbers all come up
My lousy weekend turned into a dream...
It didn't last, as truth like neon shone:
A lightning strike! ...Wallet and ticket gone!
