case study concert room sound insulation
Melbourne Social Club - Lancaster
Served with a noise abatement order this club had to act quickly to avoid financial disaster when they could no longer provide live entertainment. The club has been expertly sound proofed , as the following describes.

This picture shows the new ceiling going in.Note the red reinforcing steelwork necessary to take the extra weight of the acoustic panel ceiling.
A conventional Tee bar grid suspended ceiling system was used with wire supporting 25 kg/sq metre

These are the sound proof panels placed above the decorative ceiling tiles. The panel is a composite of plasterboard and high density mineral fibre with an average sound insulation of 25 db .

There were two emergency escape routes. This one was straight from the concert room to the outside so it was fitted with a steel soundproof doorset ,very secure and with some 45 db sound insulation,it matches the sound insulation of the brickwork it is set into.
The other escape route had two doors with a connecting passage so it was only necessary for good rubber seals to be fitted around the door perimeters.

The ventilation air was drawn through a duct through the roof and as noise could easilly travel out through this route a silencer was fitted. The location of this was only 10 mtrs from the complainants bedroom.
The exhausted air from the concert room had existing ductwork in the roof void with limited access and so silencers were mounted externally.

The sound level controller gives visual warning to the performers as they approach the maximum permitted sound level. With the sound insulation in place the permitted allowed sound level was set to 95 dBA with the local authority.
